Bought the car from my boss before he retired and moved to Belize! Only had 29,000 miles, but is 11 years old. It was driven daily at least 10 miles (he lived close to work), so it never sat idle for long periods.

I've had it for a little over a year with no issues, until 2 nights ago. Check engine, VSC, Tiangle, ! all lit up. All went away yesterday morning only to come back in the afternoon. This morning the dealer told me it needs a new hybrid battery ($4,075 - $1,350 core charge + installation).

I see a number of posts and sites offering re-manufactured batteries and cells. I'm pretty handy myself, but looking for input before I dive into this on my own. Who here has recently replaced on their own, and what source did you use for your battery? Is there anything I should know up front before even considering such a task?

On the off chance anyone is in the DC metro area (Northern VA) and willing to lend some in person guidance, I'd certainly appreciate it!

    welcome!

you can find many threads here on rebuilding batteries. if done properly, you will get some months, maybe more out of it. but you have an old battery, and it will require ongoing down time and maintenance. if that's right up your alley, go for it!

buying a reconditioned battery from someone is the same, but your trusting their knowledge and ethics to do it right. many have been shortchanged going this route,

a third alternative is to buy new battery and install it yourself

I haven't found much good info about this battery, but my local Pep Boys says they will install it for free. Including all local taxes, it's about $1,400, and lists a 3 year replacement warranty. Any thoughts?

I can't post links yet, but the SKU at Pep Boys is 1164400. Dorman OE Solutions Remanufactured Hybrid Battery

NO! They have a high failure rate. At 1400 you are getting close to new factory battery price. Some places sell them for around 1600

I'd gladly jump at a new factory battery for $1,600!

Also, the error code reported by the dealer was P0A80.

I've been hearing a lot about newpriusbatteries by 2k1toaster.....i would have gone that route but I needed a new battery ecu. I went with a cardone from rockauto it ran 1000$ with a 995$ core charge. Replacing the battery was about 2hours work.

I'm not sure if my cardone will last, but it has a 3yr warranty. If I had the money I would have gone with new cells.

Get Dr.prius app, torque, and a 10$ veepeak Bluetooth obdII sensor. Way worth it.
    Will readout battery info etc.

I bought an 05 with the Dorman before I knew better. Vehicle runs well and is in very good condition. My hope is this Dorman gives us 5 yrs of solid service. What I know now is only buy the battery that the @2ktoaster is selling.

Unless you are an uber-thrifty masochistic loon like me, who enjoys replacing a module or two every year :sneaky:

Even doing that, it has been the least costly vehicle we have ever owned, in terms of maintenance.

Is it difficult to replace modules? The HV part kind of freaks me out.

Not at all. With the orange safety switch removed, it is as safe as one can expect. As with ANY battery, shorting the terminals can result in very bad things, so just don't do that.

My son loves his 05. I did all the easy stuff and it runs, charges like a champ. One module is sometimes showing up on the Dr Prius diagnostic test but no accompanying codes yet. It's a rehash Dorman which I didn't know about at purchase. Going to try and kill the Dorman before the warranty expires in 48 months.

If my issue just started, what's the likelihood that it only needs a few cells replaced? What's the easiest way to test them? Dr. Prius was mentioned? I order this and should have tomorrow:

Will that give me individual diagnostics for each cell?

Tech stream is the only bona fide diagnostic tool as I understand and hear on this forum. Dr Prius is probably considered a distant second, third to that-

yes, you will only need a few cells. but balancing is a tedious job, and you'll be replacing other old/bad cells every now and then

Yes, Dr Prius will give you individual module health reports. I think it's decent but not the best.

I have done three (if you ignore the bad replacement I got) in two years. The first round was two modules, very easy to find and the second was one, again easy to find. Fact is, the #3 module was questionable last year, within spec but the furthest from the pack average. Had I three good replacements at that time, I would have done them all then.

If you have, or purchase, a quality battery charger for RC toys that can perform the discharge > recharge cycle automatically and provide the module capacity, it is tedious but not at all difficult to do. Depending on your motivation and the charger, a day, maybe two for the whole pack; then you know exactly where each module stands in terms of balance, which is THE KEY.

I generally short-cut that and simply load test each module with an 1156 lamp while measuring the voltage. Any one with 7.2v or less is ditched, they generally read 7.4-8.2v under this load.

I wonder what the software is? I don’t think Amazon would allow the cracked Techstream software to be sold on their site, like the Chinese places provide.
