Stuck oil filter

    The linked article is a pretty thorough and informative breakout of the most common filters and the measurable differences in performance/build quality. I'll be looking at the Amsoil and Royal Purple for my next oil change. I feel ok with the Wix currently in use.

    Yea... It's an interesting discussion and there's always more to learn... How often you change your oil and rarely if ever letting it run low on oil will define engine life way more than cheap oil filters. Of course wanting to use the very best oil filter if it really does make a difference makes sense. As for @05PreeUs ghosting out, he tends to do that... He likes to make huge claims (last time I think it was PCV valves not being replaced often enough destroying engines) and then refuse to discuss it further. I'm always willing to change my mind/admit I'm wrong based on additional information. Wish it was the same for others...

    Based on what I learned from the link I gonna go back to using Purolator, which seems best quality for price... The conclusion I made a couple years back was that many filter sellers were contracting to the same factories who made identical filter with many different brand names printed on the outside. Gonna keep reading and learning though... It's just about to be time to change the oil again...

    @sshat, not everyone in the world replies to posts of theirs, myself specifically included. The fact that you can find contrary OPINIONS to what I have posted on PC or elsewhere, does not change engineering facts. Your lack of self-education and experience does not change fact.

    I meant no disrespect. We can feel better about anything if we lower the stakes of importance. Ultimately you both have helped a lot of people on this forum (I have read that). That's cool and good for all!

    Agreed!!! Being right or wrong is really hard for people... Brings up difficult emotional issues for some... But if we don't make such a big deal about it, there's always more to learn & teach no matter how much we already know. Of course you can't do that if you think you're always right and no one is allowed to question or ask for further clarification. Many of the world's worst problems could be resolved if we did better at, as you say, "We can feel better about anything is we lower the stakes of importance."

    It turns off to the left, if you've crushed it with a filter type (band with a handle) wrench, pound a screwdriver through it and turn the scres driver, be persistant, or take it to any mechanic, if the car runs.
    Tighten the new one by hand, oil the rubber seal with clean oil, and as mentioned, (after cleaning the male recepticle), thread it on until it makes contact then another 1/2 to 3/4th's turn, the gen 3 went to a cartridge type filter, which takes a certain type wrench to remove.

    Ignore the negativity on your thread, soldier on.

    As a former mechanic, here's my 2 cents. Like others have said, use a metal cap wrench first. If that doesn't work, try the screwdriver trick. Hammer it through and turn it off. On the topic of filters. I believe all filters have to meet oem specifications. People trash fram, but I have used fram for 37 years without an engine or filter failure. I'm currently trying the expensive fram with mobil 1.
    @05PreeUs , I'm not disagreeing with you, but always willing to learn. What brand filters caused engine failures and the specifics about the filters that failed please.

    I'm not naming names, mostly because ANY manufacturer can build a bad part, but none of the filter manufacturers (and they all *claim* to build their own) have stood behind the failures.
    - Brand 1: Weld broke between the threaded insert and can, causing catastrophic oil loss, which ruined the engine (pressure sensor/switch was on the filter header and while it read low because of the leak, the galley pressure was essentially zero). Cost customer ~$12k

    - Brand 2: internal plastic parts have melted (OEM is metal for this reason), choking off the oil supply to various engine parts, starving them of oil. Various engine models and repair costs from $2k to over $20k

    - Brand 3: offers oil filter "kits", these kits are listed for a MY range and sometimes they do not accurately identify engine model changes. Result, you get a tall filter cap with a short filter (OEM is filter only, does not come with a cap, re-use the production part) = NO FILTRATION and very low oil flow thru the galley. I have seen this be an easy fix and cost multiple thousands.

    - Brand 4: says their (air) filter meets all OEM specs (OEM has a "tie-bar" to keep the media spread under adverse conditions), after it is installed it will "droop" in the airbox and any moisture will create enough weight and restriction to dislodge the edge seals allowing UNFILTERED air into the engine. Result = dusted engine requiring a rebuild.

    - Brand 5: says their oil filters meet all OEM specs (bypass valve under capacity), yet during cold start the can separates from the base starving the engine of any oil. New engine time, which on these models was about $3500.

    I have worked for a LOT of different shops, on nearly every make of OEM and used about all aftermarket parts brands in my 40 years. One thing I KNOW 100%. OEMs sell quality parts they stand behind, because their reputation DEPENDS ON IT. Aftermarket WILL and DOES blame the installer or owner, nearly every time.

    Thanks, I've learned something new. I haven't worked on an engine that failed from a defective filter. I will rethink filters from now on.

    They are also running good deals on oil;).

    Just got two 5 quart jugs of Pennzoil Pure Platinum 0w-40 for less than $20 a piece :).

    For OP: is there a chance it's cross threaded? Mine was always taken to Meineke before I bought it (yikes) and I had my mechanic do the first oil change for me. Glad I did because they had cross threaded it and it took him an hour to get it off.

    I know it's been many months since this post, but wearing a good pair of gloves can really make the difference when wrangling out a slippery oil filter.
