I'm not understanding the problem if you take this as a generic, functional instruction to turn around and go the other way in the safest & quickest practical manner. Real U-turn, right around the block(s), left around the block(s), through a parking lot, whatever fits with your current lane position and traffic and signal light situation. GPS is not consistently accurate enough to figure out which lane (left-middle-right) of a multi-lane road you are in, and certainly doesn't know the current traffic conditions and signal timing. Nor does the map database necessarily know local U-turn restrictions.

I can see this as a problem only for the zombie drivers who must take instructions literally, without any interpretation or situational judgment.

As was said before, some apps do require phone data, but it is totally worth it because these apps actually give you real time traffic info and will re-route you around congestion. This may not seem like a big deal until that one time you are saved from waiting 45 minutes while a gas tanker that turned over between two exits 30 miles apart is cleared off the road. This actually happened to me. Exit 3 and 2 on Mass Pike are about 30 miles apart and I was traveling west while Waze told me to take exit 3 and go on strange back roads. I did not listen (thought something glitched with the app) and that cost me about 45 minutes. These apps track the traffic way better than anything else (like radio stations) because they have the data points (users) and that takes up some phone data. However, I believe it's worth it as they also warn you about police (user provided info that you as a user can choose to submit), road hazards, etc. In real time. That is 21st century tech and it works and it's (mostly) free if you have a smartphone with a data plan.

If you don't, it's still cheaper and better to buy a device for $200 that is competitive and current in the marketplace as opposed to the car nav that has never been good or cheap.

My Garmin was more like ~$50, 8 years ago, and it still works better than PRIME's Nav system.

Oh, I always use the familiar route to “test” the navigation system, especially this is a new car for me. Well, with the same route, other GPS i’ve used didn’t give me the “stupid” idea of making a U turn! Instead, they calculate fast enough a new route, like taking the next right turn.....so and so! That’s what I mean this navigation in Toyota is way lower in performance!

we all have our preferences. sometimes you know the way it is taking you is a problem, so you just want a new route based on where you currently are.

My Garmins do, because I haven't disabled U-turns in their Avoidances menu. (Or maybe I specifically enabled then, changing a factory default. Don't remember now.) This is one of many check-box items for individual preferences.

Rechecking my 2012 Prius, U-turns is not one of the available choices on its Avoidances menu. (It can select to avoid freeways, tolls, ferries, international borders, etc.) Have you confirmed that your newer 2018 also lacks this specific customization choice?

    There isn’t a “disable U turn” option! ( or u just joking?)
There’s not a lot of options in the this car nav than the Garmin or Tom Tom I bought!

It's interesting you say that... I don't actually see the behavior the OP is stating... if I miss a turn it simply recalculates a new route, and not simply tell me to U-turn (it *may* if the shortest route is a legal U-turn, but otherwise it'll plot some route that is either entirely new or some quick method of getting you back on track).

I wonder if it has something to do with it being a Canadian model or Canadian database (maybe the Canadian database has less information than the US version).

I live in a gated-community and every freaking time I start a route from my house or to go home, the damn thing says "detailed guidance may not be available on some parts of the route" (or something like that) and makes me click OK (or wait for it to time-out). I wonder if something similar is happening in Canada but the that warning is disabled in the Canadian version.

Actually, OP, do you get that warning at all?
