How many hours labor did he charge you for the 20 minute repair? And how much was part?

Sorry I no longer have a copy of that receipt plus my daughter had brakes and other work done so I don't think I could have done a breakdown for just that part. She did tell me that the total bill was a fraction of what the stealership wanted, which totally made her day/week/month!

I used to spend a lot of time on here, but quit logging in back around 2012 when they changed the website up.
My 2009 Prius (95k mileage) has had the code for almost 18 months but I finally had to get it fixed to pass the Ca smog to get registered ($142 Ca registration and $58 smog with certificate)
I tried following this thread, unfortunately some of you don't read what the OP was saying (that he is on the other coast and his daughter's situation) I am sure that you meant well.
I am down in the Southbay area.
I had been quoted $525 (Chula Vista Toyota ) and about $600 at a Frank Toyota.
I called Ecomax and Mr Lee answered. His English was perfectly understandable, he knew exactly what I needed, told me relax that it would take 45 minutes to repair and would be $250 including the part. Easy enough for me. I went the next day and added my 95k oil change for $19.
It ended up taking closer to 2 hours because it's a small shop and he didn't have an empty bay and his mechanic took my car for a long test drive after he was done.
I talked quite a bit with Mr. Lee, he is a good man and I HIGHLY recommend him and his shop.
Compared to a dealership, some people would call his shop a little "ghetto " but it falls under the "mom and pop" type business for me.
I told Mr. Lee about priuschat when he was done, and that I was going to give him a thumbs up and refer him to here.
It's been a week and I passed smog and my 2009 is good as new.
    Thanks for the recommendation Chris

Very lucky day for any shop doing this 20 minute job and raking in $175 for "labor".

But, can't blame them or the customers. The customers don't exactly have a phone book of honest, reliable, expert mechanics that do work on the side for honest prices.

And the shop is dealing with high rent, high employee salaries, etc...And is basically just going by the book. Even though they know it takes 20 minutes they punch in the job on the computer and the computer gives them the number of labor hours.

Sometimes they get lucky, like on this job...And other times they underquote and spend 6 hours when the computer tells them it will be a 3 hour job.

I took an online automotive course last winter online. The guys name is Paul Danner and he is the head diagnostic instructor at the Rosedale Technical College in Pittsburgh, Pa. He often talked about taking five minutes to diagnose a car because of his experience he can make a good living and then sometimes things don't go right and he looses money.
