200,000+ miles and battery life

    I am trying to find a car for my nephew and he is on a limited budget. I am considering getting a prius plug in with over 200,000 miles and I am wondering if it would be worth the gamble. First of all has anyone had to replace the traction battery because the car simply wouldn't go. Is there any 300,000+ prius plug ins out there? My theory is that as the battery degrades the charging range would diminish greatly but would still function as a regular hybrid and would have greater battery life versus a regular Nimh hybrid battery . Looking forward to response

    i think a couple posters have a little over 200k. iirc, a few packs have been replaced under warranty, but i don't recall anyone buying one. but not many members are beyond warranty yet.

    if it were my, i would research salvage batteries, to find prices and if they can sit without becoming an anchor.
    also, keep in mind the battery is huge and heavy, and may not be a diy job.

    unless it were a significantly better deal than a regular prius, i would look around for the latter.

    you are correct, natural degradation will still let it run like a regular hybrid

    I wonder if the ECM would recognize range degradation as a fault and throw a code or just keep operating as a regular hybrid. If it doesn't I think the Prius plug in traction battery would outlast the motor

    from what i've read, it doesn't. and toyota calls degradation normal, and not warrantable.

    Depends on the condition of the battery. Get the battery checked. I had Toyota do an inspection when I bought mine. Best of luck.
