This summer, I was in Nova Scotia at our cottage when my 25,000 mile service came due. I booked an appointment at the “local” dealer, two hours away and when I arrived there, the service guy told me that Canadian dealers would not honor Toyota Care terms on cars bought in the US. So I paid $129 for the service and I was told Toyota USA would reimburse me when I got back to the US. When I got back in October, I contacted Toyota US and was told that they would not reimburse me. Caveat emptor. We spend four months in Nova Scotia every year and now I realize that my very expensive add-on warranty for 7-70 on the Prime probably won’t be honored in Canada. Toyota US and Toyota Canada need to coordinate support for customers or this will be my last Toyota.

Just wait until you discover that add on warranty is pretty much useless in the US too. But it did help the dealer make a boat payment.

25,000 mile service is just tire rotation, perhaps $20 CDN. I would not go back to that dealer. Any local mechanic can service a Prime.

Not very surprised. I can't think of any US product I purchased that had international warranty beyond country boarder. GSM international phone I purchased while back on Amazon, which was made in US but intended to be sold outside of the US specifically said no warranty when purchased in US.

You gott'a read the fine print. It might be good. You only get what's in print on the contract. It will make a difference if it is the Toyota Financial VSA or a 3rd party product.

You paid $129 for what's basically a tire rotation? Is that CDN or US dollars?

Um idk if this was just to get money but my dealer told me that no one else can service a prime and that I would lose my warranties on my prime like the 10 yr batt warranty etc is that true. She was the finance manager so im guessing not:confused:

They are only lying when their lips move. Absolutely not true.

That's just the dealership talking. Again from the Toyota USA Warranty and Maintenance Booklet:

Yes it behooves you to be responsible, keep records (next page goes into that), but the oil change or tire rotation on a Prius or Prime is nothing special.

    Addendum:

I'm feeling some nationalistic pride: our Canadian dealerships can be just as larcenous as their US counterparts...

I got oil changed, too. It was a rip, though. The pisser is that the two “separate” Toyota companies don’t honor each other’s warranties. That’s absurd. I don’t know if all the car companies pull the same stunt but it seems like fraud to me.

Tougher yet, the Toyota in Hawaii is not the Toyota in the rest of the US, and the warranties don't match and don't transfer.

It works the other way as well. In 1984-86 my employer wrote software for American Honda Motor Company, Inc. and in 1987-88 I was paid to translate it to French (and DATAPAC) for Honda Canada Inc. We cheerfully charged them twice.

    (a) It is not a warranty. It is a sales promotion.
    (b) An oil change is not needed at 25k miles, and not part of ToyotaCare. Change the oil if you wish, but at 25k it's always on you.
