This thread caught my eye, since I have noticed that my 2010 has been making an unusual sound more often lately, just as the car comes to a complete stop.

The post earlier describing a wooden pole and a rubber disk seems to describe it. It isn't on every stop - I think it might actually just be on gentle/smooth stops. Is this actually the brake booster sound?

Other Than the charging aspect, they are disc brakes like on any other car as your car comes to a stop. What you are probably hearing is mechanical chatter from the pads. Kind of like sliding a rubber soled shoe on a very smooth surface and it skips as you drag it. It's usually caused by a pad that fit a little loosely in the caliper. If you replace your own brakes make sure to put the thin plates that are clipped on the old pads back on the new ones. The purpose of them is to take up any space between the "frame" part of the pad and the caliper. I like to use the brake quieting spray that comes in a blue spray can. Lay the pads face down on a piece of cardboard and spray the backs liberally. About the time it takes to drink a beer or cup of coffee (depending on the time of day) is about the time needed for them to get good and tacky, then put the plates back on and install.

Another thing no one ever does. Run a rag inside where the 2 bolts go. They contain bushings where the front and rear pad housings slide. The parts will have a little boot around them and they should slight back and forth very smoothly. A sure sign they aren't sliding smoothly is a worn out inside pad and an outside pad with plenty of life left. I worked on cars while in college and saw this about 25% of the time. The uneven pressure can also cause chattering. This is also common on new pads installed on new or resurfaced rotors. This was a common complaint when metallic pads came out but will usually go away in a couple hundred miles.

BTW. I used to drive a car down the road while riding the brakes on resurfaced rotors for a few miles getting them good and hot to break them in.

My Prius has the same symptoms as the original poster's. Some of you don't quite understand what he was saying - everything is normal during most of the braking action, with no unusual noises or anything. It's just at the very end, when you're about to come to a complete stop, that it makes the squeaking noise. It's more of a rubbery squeak than a metallic squeak, and it tends to happen when you don't have the brake pedal jammed all the way down. It's interesting that the original poster stated that his dealer says it's normal for some Priuses to make a noise when they come to a stop.

Is that a US zip code, for your location?

Can you upload a video to youtube? If you can manage that, then you can post a link.

Regarding the squawking sound, there have been issues with 3rd gen that involve the brake booster (gizmos attached to the firewall), and that's my first thought. Maybe more knowledgeable 2nd gen owners will chime in.

Not a video but voice recording. However she took it to a Hybrid mechanic who was able to determine that it was the abs modulator on the firewall under the break pedal and that is the module adjusting for the amount of pressure on the pedal. It's more active in cold weather due to the viscosity of the brake fluid but once the car warms up then you don't hear it much anymore as a matter of fact because I have three other Priuses I'm able to make the same sound happen in any of my other ones just by pressing very hard on the pedal so nothing to worry about. And my zipcode is in Puerto Rico where it's warm and that car has been here all his life but just moved up to Harrisburg so she's hearing sounds she's never heard before and seems like the lights going off on the dash happened the other day when it was 23 degrees these are all new to her because the car has been here for so long. But thanks.

THIS ^, is what my 2013 is doing, exactly! More of a RUBBER sound. One dealer I took it to, said it was brakes, and they greased the back of the pads. Yeeeaaahhh...….didn't work.
I'm thinking struts, or engine mounts.....or some sort of bushing part. Haven't had time to take it in to an alternate dealer/mechanic. I have 118,000 miles on it, and almost thinking of living with it until it dies :)

You don't just do the back of the pad. You have to clean it up and put the paste on the edged
where the metal pad touches the caliper. That is what vibrates.
