I own a circa year 2003 Panasonic plasma TV. Also a circa 2003 JVC VHS/DVD player and recorder.

    Said JVC device has failed.

Went to buy a blu-ray player (apparently DVD players are no longer made) and found that my old JVC player has UHF & VHF input and output.

Which plug into the back of the TV. The old TV only has the old s video connections and the coaxial cable ports.

The new blu-rays have hdmi connections.

I see no way to connect a blu-ray player to this TV.

Am I correct in my assumption?

I COULD live without the player (then the TV would be directly connected to the converter box). But, since we only get a few stations on over-the-air antenna, it is nice to watch a DVD occassionally....

    Any work-arounds?

    eBay?

I was just looking at several shelves of VHS tapes. Good stuff. Several others of DVDs.

Blu-Ray then leads to updating the TV to 4k OLED etc. Keep me away from COSTCO.

My grandkids became fascinated by the VHS rewind of a Shirley Temple tape. Next time we watched a DVD, they asked me to rewind it. Well maybe they said "go backwards".

    Technology changes.

Considering that a new 55" UHD is between 400 - 500 at Costco, and 1080P 55" LG runs 400 at BestBuy, just buy a new TV. Yours is 15 years old, time to go....... It's XMAS, you owe it to your eyes, plus they are Smart TV's.... well worth the paltry price..

are you sure it only has s video and not rca? there is an cdmi to rca adapter, and most old tv's had them

i see hdmi to s video as well

i also see dvd players with s video outputs on amazon for $30.

Ebay will supply you with 2003 era anything, you can possibly find what you need to use your medium.

If you don't have fast internet connectivity, and have to replace the 2003 era pieces, not impossible, silly to upgrade to new electronics if your signal is 30 fps or non-existent.

This piqued my interest since I haven't shopped for DVD players in so long!!!

eBay has some DVD players, with s-video, for as low as $7.

Tech is really cheap these days but if you don't want to spend more than you have to I would check Craigslist, find a local thrift shop or a garage sale.

Before tossing an old DVD recorder, know that it contains a powerful LED emitter. That, with replacement optics from some mad-scientist website, makes a marvelously tragic toy for males of a certain age. Light matches, pop balloons or blister paint at stand-off distances.

No one would ever contemplate bodily harm with such a thing. Right? But give to a dumpster or swap shop? I think not.

Correct. Need a converter box from HDMI to S-Video (not worth the cost), or buy an old DVD player from the thrift store/ebay. Or as others have said, just buy a new TV. You can get 32" 1080p high-def television for $100, Or a 4k 45"+ for ~$300.

We always seem to buy a blu-ray player, use it extremely sporadically, virtually never, as often as not just to play an audio CD. And then will be playing a video disc, and find either there's a problem with the player, or the amp's inputs have gotten bumped somehow. The latter is always an immense learning curve: diving into our Onkyo's settings menu is not intuitive.
