    Fed tax credit is never included in the purchase price, financed amount, or sales tax. Most dealers have no knowledge on how this incentive works anyway. The best way to deal with financed purchase is, as soon as you file a federal tax return, if you get a tax refund, apply it to paying off the loan to reduce the interest. On the other hand, the Toyota rebate incentive should be subtracted from your purchase price, so it should not be included in the financed amount.

    most people are NOT including the fed $4,500. tax credit in the otd price.

    if you want 4k toyota rebate, come east. you can keep repeating it, but that won't change anything.

    if you are going to purchase in cali, ignore the posts outside cali, it's a whole nuther world

    No Haggling. Flew in from Denver area to Dealer near LAX, then drove car home.
    Absolutely abysmal inventory near Denver, most over MSRP.

    I'm working this to be eligible for $5k state credit and the $4.5k federal credit, and wanted to close this year.

    Okay, that clears some things up... Now, the other thing is, all the dealerships here don't even offer a good APR with the cash rebate (3.9-5.9% APR, it's crazy). They won't let me have my cake, let alone the whole thing. I guess I could go through my bank (or USAA), as they won't do TFS with the cash rebates anyway and mention third party banks they use.

    Only reason i've avoided it is that TFS is more lenient with F1 visa (International Students), which is what my wife currently is, a 36mo finance (seems to be what private banks are offering F1s) is a hard chunk to bite haha. She'll be the co-buyer as it's her car after all. I guess I could call USAA and find out, I just assumed... Plus the difference between TFS and USAA is like 0.10% with TFA being 2.99% and USAA being 2.89%.

    if that's the case, the $1500. will make a bigger difference.

    what do you mean by 'lenient'? getting the loan, or if you default?

    Fed just increased the interest rate fourth times this year. This may signal the end of 0% APR marketing.

    Widely expected today, but disappointed to see their language for future increases hasn't become more dovish as many anticipated. Many thought the language would change to say that further rate increases in 2019 would depend on sustained economic growth and/or rising core inflation (the later is not currently happening and is actually slightly below target).

    Instead the Fed highlighted the current strong (U.S.) economy. The FOMC now estimates that it will raise rates twice next year, down from the September forecast of 3 increases.

    In 2015 when I purchased a new Prius (Gen3), Toyota was offering either a $750 cash incentive or 0% APR on 60 mo loan. A simple calculation on $24,000 purchase price made it clear that taking 0% APR was better than taking cash. ($24,000 invested earning 4% will surpass $750 cash in a single year.) That was not the case with PRIME, at least not in NE. Cash Rebate is a much better choice than taking low APR. That seems to be true even this year.

    This is normal price in California. Why don't you fly to east coast to save more?

    Firstly I didn't see the extra discount on east coast so it wasn't part of my consideration.
    Secondly I'm impulsive.
    Thirdly Longer flight, Longer Drive, More hotels and Time cost is much higher with east coast.

    Certainly could have shipped it for maximum savings, but I wanted to see the car, and this got me a trip to LA and Las Vegas which I was excited for.

    They can't. Eligibility may remain uncertain until after purchase, and not all purchasers will qualify for it, or for the whole amount.

    E.g. if I bought right now, I wouldn't qualify for much. In my current retired, no-wages-anymore, no-pension-yet financial state, I don't pay enough tax to cover the credit. I can make it so within a few business days by doing some retirement account Roth conversion, but if something fumbles there or I get lazy with the paperwork, the tax credit disappears. No rational car seller would take that risk.

    All,

    I'm in Ohio, no rebates or incentives (besides fed tax credit) that I'm aware of. Have negotiated with several dealers, seem to be very stingy around here. Out the door a couple thousand below MSRP for advanced is best I've gotten. Maybe it's not bad for local, but with rebates out there it makes my deal look bad. Can someone recommend what state/dealer would be a starting point to get a better deal? Need to be sure can get incentive even though I'm titling in Ohio.

    Trying to buy a prius prime. I am also buying out of state.
    Is it normal for the dealership to ask for 10% non-refundable deposit. In my case $2500. Should I just tell them I am not going to do it. That's a lot of money for a "non-refundable" deposit. Any input would be appreciated.

    Sounds high. I put $500 deposit on my credit card to buy mine out of state (Prime Toyota Boston). If it didn’t work out I was prepared to dispute the charge.
