I went the cheaper route and bought a cheap battery and when installed the Dashboard Lights stopped working. They did this intermittently. I am aware of the recall which I missed. But what is more concerting is that when I drive the car it is shaking and seems as if the engine is working very hard. This was not the issue yesterday.
Could an inefficient battery be the cause of this?

I don’t think so. Mine dashboard died either after I installed cheap 12v battery. I high voltage from fresh battery affects to capacitors which was dying in dashboard

Bad dash is failed combo meter. $100 a few posters rebuild them on this site I recommend Matt at texashybrids.

What model 12 volt battery did you install. Get a Volt meter and measure the dc volts at the front jump point under the hood and report back here.

When you say cheap, it wasn't cheap because it was a 6 V lawn mower/motorcycle battery, per chance?
