Hi all, future first time owner of a Prius here (and first time car owner).
Been deliberating between the limited availability of used Priuses in my area (Greater Toronto Area) under 13k. The most recent one was a pretty nice 2011. Drove great, but as most do there was some reddening of parts (rust?), Especially seemingly in the wheels (brakes?). I asked and the dealer said no accidents, but there was a small dent in the front right. I asked the dealer and he said that's not an accident (but I find it suspicious he didn't mention it when asked initially). Battery remained full and seemed to charge well, mpg was staying under 5, only issue came when i activated ev in a parking lot, turned around and drove ~25m out, the battery iindicator dropped to 2 bars and kicked me out of ev for low energy, and didn't recharge even slightly in the 2 km back.

    $11,995, + tax = 13,565,
2011 with backup camera and Bluetooth,
    120,000 km.

    Advice?

    welcome!

it will need an egr circuit cleaning soon. take that into account with the price.

see the nutzaboutbolts video for clarification, can be close to $1,000. at a dealer.

i'm a bit concerned about the battery, the way you describe it, i think you need a longer test drive.

what is the battery warranty there?

The disc brakes will see some rust spots if the car is sitting around for a day or two and it rained or snowed. The discs don’t get cleaned like a regular car because of regenerative braking. If you just brake harder or shift into neutral then brake, the car will use the brake pads and the pads will clean the discs (basically no need to worry there).

Also, resale value seems high in the GTA. I have a 2010 with 160,000km and I was thinking it’s worth quite a bit less than $10,000. (And mine is a fully loaded Technology package with leather, nav, solar roof and radar cruise control)

The precipitous drop in charge seems odd. When the car was new, you could probably get 1-2km on EV range in the summer. I do see my battery charge drop quickly sometimes when I’m driving around in EV mode (without pressing the button) while other times, it decreases at a “normal” rate (based on what I can remember when my car was new). So.... kinda inconclusive unless it repeatedly drops or stays low.

I’d keep looking. The issue is that you wanna keep some spare change in the back pocket for a battery replacement. It’s unlikely you’ll need it but given that you’re buying used, you’re obviously closer to replacement than the first owner. (We were quoted about $3,000 for our 2005 Prius) so I’d try to find a good example just under $10k or near $10k so you can keep about $3000 just in case.

You shouldn’t worry about battery replacement since if it does fail and you do replace it with a new OEM battery, it’ll drive like a new car with mpg back to when it was new.

Oh wow, let me know if you want a buyer
Reassuring news about the brakes, i only checked before the test drive.
Yes, resale value is apparently really high, or if you're in the states maybe you're not taking the low cost of CAD. This is $8,900 USD. Let me know if that changes your thoughts on preposing I look elsewhere.

I wanted a 2012-2013 but all the ones for sale are in worse condition than the 2010-2011s with at least $1000 more in cost. I'd love to get a 2010-2011 but battery worsens with age and there's the whole burning oil problem.

    I’m in Canada ;)

2012 was the midlife update so there were some changes (both good and bad).

If you have to go 2010 or 2011, go with a 2011. So far, we’ve only seen oil burning with 2010 models. (Mine hasn’t but I assume it’s only a matter of time. It appears to occur after 160,000km and I just passed that last week).

Whoops guess that means all Priuses in my area are really friggin expensive. I thought as much but i had nothing to compare to.
What was bad about the midlife update?
Would you recommend dealer or private? And if private, how do I avoid getting scammed?
Also, is it EGR VALVE, not circuitry? New to cars in general but i have a feeling i could learn, i like repairing tech. How difficult is it to diy?

I’m not sure how difficult it is but you can watch the videos and determine for yourself based on your skill level.

Videos #16 & 17. There’s also a link to a thread in the table of contents at the top of the thread.

Bad? Mostly had to do with the infotainment. Most models had the base 6.1” Display Audio unit that was outsourced. You had to get the upgrade 7” high res LCD with nav to get the familiar Toyota in-house software. Some might argue that isn’t an upgrade anyway lol but I prefer Toyota’s in-house software vs. the 6.1” units’ software.

But I suppose at least the backup camera is in the head unit for 2012-2015 rather than in the rear view mirror (for non-nav vehicles for 2010-2011).

The 5” MID resolution was updated too with nicer graphics.

    Thanks!
Also, you didn't say what your recommendation was, dealer or buyer. Any?

Looking around, I guess I found a few slightly better earlier:
    ca,carguru,com/Cars/l-Used-Toyota-Prius-East-York-d15_L438626#listing=216709896

(Wow, really difficult to post URLS)

$14k, 95,000km, "accident in the front".
Haven't test drived, but is that something I should avoid?
I generally avoided all three (2010 and 2015 as well) priuses for sale by this guy, due to mixed reviews:
    upload_2018-12-20_0-8-41.png

So... not sure. Also not sure what accidents should immediately disqualify a vehicle purchase (or if I shouldn't bother getting one with ANY)
Debating whether to just gamble on a variety of 200k+ km 2010's for a few thousand.

    And also,
    upload_2018-12-20_0-26-11.png
I see this in almost every pre-2013 prius (excepting one prius v that I saw, but wagons are not for me, otherwise it was PERFECT) in varying degrees. This is a 2010, seems to be 3rd worst for thise rusting issue so far that I've seen (to give you an idea of how bad it gets)
The point on the left with the question mark typically has something slightly hidden that tends to have a LOT of rust.
Any idea why? Should I be concerned? Can I get rid of this somehow?

That’s a motor mount and even in non salty environments they show some rust or corrosion :(.

Just a function of the materials of construction. One thing I’ve heard you could do is have a sacrificial metal attached to the body with the idea that this metal would corrode before other metallic components ;).

But being in the great white north, I’ll say most of not all cars you will look at will have corrosion present, particularly at the engine area where salt spray will get through the grill and attack the surfaces you identified.

Good luck and keep us posted (y)

Thanks! By the way, I know inspecting at a mechanic is a must for private, but do you have recommendations about this process?

Just check with the mechanic on what they would do for an inspection and understand that going in;).

I do some searching on pre-purchase inspection and see what others have had done. For me, I’d take it for a decent test drive (say 40 miles or so) to see how it performs, what noises are heard, are there any red flags. If possible prior to test driving, I’d check the dip stick and fluid levels and see where they are situated and if anything is low or high.

Used cars are a dice roll, so no matter what pre-purchase inspection you buy, it might miss something’s.

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Oh.. either one is fine. As long as it's inspected (if it's private) and it checks out at the dealer.

Mine doesn't have rust. I'm guessing it's an Ontario thing. (Maybe Maritimes too?). Mine's definitely in better condition than that (or the blue hides the dirt better than the white haha).

Hi. I am in Toronto too. I've had problems on my rear brakes due to rust. My car engine bay is not as rusty as that picture, but I have a 2012. I have a little rust on the edge of some bolts.

Are you negotiating with a Toyota dealership? You can ask the dealer to replace the rotors or brakes as part of the deal. I got my dealer to throw in free mats, a cargo net, and an oil change.

I bought my car with the front bumper repaired. The previous owner hit a deer in Hamilton. I was shown pictures of the damage. The carproof report verfiied the damage. I brought my car to another dealership in Milton for a full inspection for $150 CDN as a condition of the sale. The other dealer couldn't even tell that the bumper was previously replaced because the bumper was repainted very well. The only thing visible was that the hood weatherstripping is loose. There was some squeaking in the steering wheel that was fixed with WD40.

My crappiest dealership experience was with Don Valley North Toyota. They used the "I will get my manager" tactic and stalled me there for 30 more minutes when we couldn't agree on a price.

Some GTA dealerships don't disclose previous repairs. Careful shopping.

Decided on a 2010 Prius. Ran an odb check, only error was tire pressure sensors malfunction, which I'm told is due to the winter tires not having any.
Dr Prius app shows 68.18% battery expectancy.
I've viewed their maintenance records and they get regular oil changes, mechanic says they've never driven into the shop with low oil, despite being 180,000km.
This car is in shockingly good condition, set aside some creaking sometimes when braking at a higher speed too quickly (not from brakes, something inside on the chassis), a weird quick beep when parking sometimes coming from the rear (I've read that's the backup beep malfunctioning in cold weather momentarily), and I'll be honest I'm not sure how to read oil. Do you measure up to the dot that has streaks of oil, or where the oil is consistent? It had streaks going up to dot 2, it was consistent at dot 1. Negotiated down to
$8000, tinted windows, summer and winter tires. One insured accident where a bicyclist just slammed into the side when it was parked. Not noticeable.
Engine is in much better quality than some 2012s I've seen, very little rust, mostly dust.

Now the question is, I'm looking for a way to finance it. Most banks only allow 7 year old cars, beyond that it's not sufficient collateral.

    Spending money:
I will definitively have $6000 in mid January, $2000 more by March. Full-time resumes April.
I currently have $~1000, another to come in a week.
I have minimum until Sunday Dec 30th as the private seller is going on vacation Monday.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Figured out finance. Finally have a reason to be thankful for a high credit score.
Got the keys today, all that's left is to hopefully get all the bureaucracy out of the way hopefully by 5pm Monday, (Christmas+boxing day is closed) or I'll have no Christmas present for myself this year :(

I'll post pics once I've got the ability to drive the thing, but it needs plates and a safety check (and technically 2 sets of stickers, one temp to get it "safety certified" at the mechanic, if they're open, and one permanent after I get it certified).

And that's if my insurance company gets my insurance sorted out in a timely manner so I can even go register the thing.

Let's hope for a Christmas Miracle!

Anyone have any recommendations for new Prius owners?

Fingers crossed for a Christmas present!

Honestly? “Just drive it” is the word of advice we give for most new owners. It’s easy to get bogged down in the new tech but it’s easy to just drive it as you would a regular car first. Then once you start picking up on the quirks and learn how it’s supposed to operate, we can get down to the nittt gritty like pulse & glide (P&G) techniques, super highway mode techniques and other ways to improve mpg
