I used to have a devil of a time in some older vehicles with carbon accumulating in the oil scraper ring groove and apparently increasing oil consumption by keeping the ring from expanding fully against the cylinder wall (i.e., "stuck rings"). The Prius engine design IIRC involves low-tension piston rings to decrease friction loss, but having low-tension ring could exacerbate the problem of carbon accumulation in the ring groove preventing full oil scraping. Could this motor medic stuff (or any other strong solvent) help oil consumption via the mechanism of removing carbon in the piston ring grooves? Plausible or not?

That's what my testing is confirming ;).

Using BG Products EPR and seeing less oil consumption:).

Yikes, Red Line is some spendy stuff...not sure I can justify that price. However, if it works...

After about 1500 miles on this oil change with Red Line 5w-30 and BG Products MOA I have not had any decrease in the oil level on the dipstick:)!

I'll update as the miles increase on this oil change interval (y).

Wow very interesting! If your updates continue the trend...I guess I might have to try it. (y)

As a side note, I am back to driving our 2010 Prius as my daughter is off to college. When I drive it, I'm not seeing nearly the oil consumption as when she drives it. She doesn't treat the car nearly as well as I do ( a lot of 'fast starts', etc...) ..so that is the obvious reason why.

    FYI Additional Background.
Current Prius status at 248k miles, had evolved a long way from a negligent prior owner...
For example when i first bought the Prius in April 2017 at ~245k miles, i was shocked upon discovering loads of leaves/twigs in internal cabin filter and no crush washer with oil drain plug; i was informed Prius was burning 1qrt oil/400 miles. No noticeable burning up to now. Still conducting rehab...
    enjoy the pics...

    update,
2005 Prius is now at 268k miles.
I been continuing to regularly use the MMMF with all my oil changes.
    - ~ low 40s/mpg ave mixed city highway driving
    - throttle is great from off the stoplight to on the highway
    - ICE idles great inner city
    - cruises great at highway speeds of up to +90mph

the car's health has been less of a worry for me since the initial procedure, as i have since driven with great confidence

I think I may try some in our 2010 this spring.

BTW - Amazon seems to have a really good deal right now.

Edit : Rereading the entire thread scared me off a bit....:D Of course, discussing *any* car product is like discussing politics/religion so who knows.

BG Products keeps working for me(y).

'Couldn't hurt'..right? (y) ....or could it? They do make a 'synthetic' version which is supposed to be 'better'. However, it is nearly the same price as the BG flush.

2010 liftback has around 125K or so...but I need to check to make sure. Son is mostly using it these days. Oil burn is about what is was before and I've given up trying to mitigate it...not worth it. However, like I said..I might throw some engine flush in when springtime comes. I will say that the car looks brand new now after body work,etc.. from his accident ( he was 0 percent at fault ). There is a thread somewhere about that too but I'm too lazy to look it up.

I'm driving the 2012 Prius v (wagon). No noticeable oil burn yet that I can see. Almost 150K on it. After my car care saga over the spring/summer ( see thread in signature ), I was a bit burned out...especially because of the full front suspension rehab project...so I never got to the EGR maintenance, etc..this year. All that stuff is overdue on the Prius v (wagon) and is scheduled for this spring.

Oops sorry that was more than a bit off topic.

I’ve given up on trying to quell oil consumption and have progressed to management of the situation as well;).

I’ve clubbed up to 0w-40 and it is running smooth:).

Consumption still around a quart every 4500 miles or so, which ain’t bad at 193 k miles.

I’ve got at least 2 more egr circuit cleanses lined up out here for members next year already, so I’ll be very familiar with your planned maintenance (y).

I probably said this earlier in the thread but................

    Engine flush products are solvents.
No car maker or oil company that I know of recommends putting SOLVENTS into your engine along with the oil.

If it does a really good job of loosening sludge, large pieces might come loose and block oil passages.

Sludge that is firmly attached to non-moving parts does NOT cause a problem......as long as it stays attached.

Any update on oil consumption or lack there of ?

Curious if you notice a color change (darker used oil, etc.) when using the MMMF, or was that only after the initial use ?

Over the last year, i have used this MMMF product on 7x different type vehicles of mine and of friend's. All drivers are more enjoying their rides and thankful to my MMMF suggestion. This is minimal risk from my vantage point, all cars are hybrids:
    - 2013 Prius; 160k miles; 1x times MMMF
    - 2011 Sonata; 145k miles; 2x times MMMF
    - 2010 Prius; 222k miles; 3x times MMMF
    - 2010 Prius; 140k miles; 3x times MMMF
    - 2009 Camry; 193k miles; 3x times MMMF
    - 2005 Prius; 270k miles; 5x times MMMF
    - 2005 Prius; 145k miles; 2x times MMMF

I use this MMMF regularly on both my 2010 (222k miles) & 2005 (270k miles) Prii
oil consumption is ~ similar for both 2005/2010 Prii: 1liter oil loss/4000 miles. I usually change my oil every 4000mile intervals.
when flushing during oil changes, the color change on dip stick is deeper brown; however upon using MMMF the drained oil is always BLACK but more viscous
i understand the hesitation from community Prius members--- if you are concerned, then this is not for you
BUT i have calculated the risk for both my higher mileage engines that i paid cheap dollar for ; )
Definitely younger mileage engine owners that have accumulated less soot & carbon, should think twice before making the leap

Good luck in making that leap to use or not to use MMMF...
    ; )

Have any of the 'cleaned' vehicles (yours or others) noticed a reduction in oil consumption?

Given that MMMF isn't generally used as a piston soak, do you feel it might work in that application?

    SFO,
unfortunately none of my other family/friends car's that i have serviced...
are driving AWARE of any oil consumption
these folks dont open the engine hood to engine inspect, and
they drive their hybrids like a reg ICE car
they are not in it for the technology but rather for the cheap-gas/maintenance ride

I only noticed the minimal oil consuption on :
    - 2005 Prius 270k miles (~1 qt oil loss /4k miles)
    - 2009 Camry hybrid 190k miles (~1 qt oil loss /5k miles)
    - 2010 Prius 222k miles (~1 qt oil loss /5k miles)
