Hey guys, bought a Prius today from someone I know and trust. Paid 1000 for it. It’s got 126k on it. They basically parked the car and non-opped it and didn’t start it up for a year. Parked running perfectly. After I jumped it, still runs perfect. But it has a ton of lights on. I’m looking at maintenance required, VSC, ABS, (!), and a check engine light, which I scanned and brought up a p0138 code, which is 02 circuit high voltage bank 1 sensor 2. I can change the o2 sensor, just wondering if there’s a reason for the rest of these lights. I’m assuming the car sitting had something to do with it. Any explanations though?

When you cleared the codes with your code reader did the lights go off? I know I had a Bluetooth obd2 reader that actually would make those lights come on just because it somehow messed up communication between the computers in the car. When I disconnected it & restarted the car all was well.

On a car that's been sitting that long, you should charge and balance the HV Battery pack BEFORE you start it. Now it "might" be a bit late to charge and balance now and you'll be looking at buying a new battery pack.

It’s under warranty from Toyota. Not a huge deal. Just wondering about the rest of the lights

You might have a bad 12v battery. Look around the site and check the battery as people suggest, pop the hood, let the car sit for an hour or so check the voltage at the jump points. Then get back to us.

You're in the Gen 2 forum, what year is the car?

If you want to figure out all the lights, you first have to make sure you have a good working 12v battery, then you can trust the lights/codes the car has

The HV battery warranty is 10 years or 150k miles. You are about 5 years out of warranty

What is the date on that receipt? The warranty was only 1 year (2 years ago). And it changed to 3 years recently. If the car sat for a year. You might already be out of warranty.

Anyways, since it's a new battery, it should hold up much better than a weak battery. It might actually be OK sitting for a year if it's a new battery. Still if you can charge it back up, it will be best

I just called the dealership and gave them the receipt number and they said there is an EIGHT (8) year warranty on it. I don't know if that's some kind of mistake but the lady said there's an 8 year warranty on it as well when I bought it. Wth.

I'm not in the battery selling business but I think @ericbecky will know when Toyota changed to 3 years warranty. I believe it was January 2017, but it could have been last year January 2018. So if your receipt is before January 2017, it only has a 1 year warranty.

Sounds like the lady does not know what she is talking about to me. Either way it’s probably not the problem with the car. Let’s get back to the problem.

Nonetheless, I've rebuilt so many of these things by now if it goes bad, I'm not super worried. It seems fine. Battery was replaced in 2016. Should be pretty healthy.

If you have equipment to rebuild the batteries, you should have a charger to charge it back up and balance it.

Take the 12v battery out and charge it at AutoZone. Then drive back home. Balance HV battery when you're home
