Bridge power down

The ICE will shut down on its own automatically. If I'm going to be sitting in stopped traffic for an extended period, I hit the Park button so I don't have to hold the car with the brake, that's all, and let the power system do its thing to keep the climate control running and the music/hands free phone going.

Just drive and operate the car as you noramally do, let the Prius do the work, it will and in the most effiecient manner.

 

I wonder what the effect would be on mileage, the difference between turning the car off and leaving it on while stopped for a while? On one side if you are using AC or heat, or even have the headlights on, the ICE will run eventually to recharge the battery. If you turn the car off you won't have any drain and the ICE, of course, won't run. But if you power down and then restart when you are ready to go won't it need to go through stages 1, 2, and 3 again? It should get through stages 1 and 2 fairly quickly because it will already be warm, but to get into stage 4 you still have to stop in stage 3 for 5 or 10 seconds. Most likely better just to leave it on.

 

Interesting question, I just had this happen to me today. For me, it all depends how hot it is outside, and whether I want to take the mpg hit. Today, it was a little cooler, and breezy, so I shut the car off and wound the windows down while I waited, and I was very glad I did. They opened the drawbridge WAY too early for a big barge going about 2 knots, and I was stuck there for >10 minutes. :angry:

 

10 minutes or so? Leave it on with the AC or heat (whichever is applicable). Depending on conditions before the stop, there will be plenty of battery.
