Is it possible my volume is going down by itself - I have the stock audio system for the package 3.?

I assume you don't have the navigation system. The navigation system does mute the left speaker while it's giving voice guidance. Other than that, I don't think the Prius ever changes the volume unless you adjust it yourself.

I noticed just the opposite today "I think".. if you turn a direction the navigation doesn't like or basically ignore its commands, it will repeat them.. after about the third repeat, seems it starts speaking louder?

Unless I was hallucinating again?

My perception is that the volume is going down as I drive faster or open a window but I don't think it is really happening.

I don' know what year you have, but my 2006 has adaptive volume control whereas its supposed to go louder as the road noise increases.. I believe the older models may have that too.

My '04 has the basic sound system and no NAV so no adaptive volume control.

I'm going to watch it closely, but a couple times it sounded like it went down, and the vol. # dipped a few notches as well - unless I'm nuts or wrong or both. No nav on my car.

The sound seems to decrease when the windows are open or you speed up do to an increase in the background noise... essentially, the sound gets "lost", even though the speakers are outputting the same amount. To help with this, some have installed sound deadening material, but really, the best
(read: cheapest) way is just to bump the volume up when you hit the highway :-p

Are you sure you aren't accidentally hitting the steering wheel button when you make turns or something? thats happened to me once or twice...

loopyloops....you have just helped me confirm I wasn't losing my eyesight the other night. I have been having some funny issues with my volume control. I tried to use the knob to turn it down once and it did not work so I tried the steering wheel and it worked just fine...and later that evening I watched it randomly turn itself down on the MFD. Are you using the steering wheel control and the knob interchangably as I am?

Just for the record, the 2006 is the first model year Prius to have adaptive volume.

Even the package 3? I think that's odd - adaptive volume. My ears must be pretty shot 'cause I usually creep up to Max anyway.

not sure about package 3 or not... You can check by going to the audio screen. on my package 7, there are two buttons in the lower left corner of the screen, one controls the speakers, the other says ASL on it, and is simply on or off (this being the adaptive sound level feature)

if it's lit up, then it's on... I'm not sure if it automatically adjusts the volume number (ie what you see when you turn the nob), or if it just changes the output at a given volume. I'll take it out today or tomorrow on the highway and look into it.

Cool - for now, I'm going to turn it off and see if it makes a difference.

What's the audio control that has 3 choices - like high, medium and low?

I think its just limited in its settings.. would be nice if you have 3 levels of adaptation or such.

Yes - the asl has 4 choices - low, med., high and off.

Yup - it's the same radio as in my 4. The ASL kicks the volume up with speed, then back down as you slow. I haven't paid enough attention to where the kick points are - in my Suburban, it's every 10mph. You'll probably find that with some music, it's not quite enough of an adjustment, but with others, it's too much. It does what it's supposed to, though. Remember to press the OK button at the top right to save the setting, else it'll go back to where it was before you started.

I think I'm good with the off setting forever as the other - which was "high"/could try low - was bugging me to no end. Glad I'm not nuts!
