Newbie owner, advice from more experienced please

    Good evening. We have bought an old but very good condition Prius, 135k on clock. We keep noticing a thunk on reversing out of the drive and hear it’s a common problem, does anyone know if it’s somethimg worth worrying about? Also we heard the trans axle fluid may need checking/changing, on that note does anyone know how often the fluids need checking? Do they need changing? Sorry to be clueless! Any info very gratefully received

    Hopefully the British members will post. You have rear disk brakes in England where we have drum brakes back there. Plus you have a more wet environment that reeks havoc on Prius brakes.

    in the u.s., toyota calls it 'lifetime fluid'. so you have to make up your own rules.

    many here think every 30k is a good idea.

    pull the wheels off and have a good look at everything

    I hear the same brake noise when I reverse in my 2015 with disc brakes. The dealer has identified this noise as the brake pads shifting. Although it happens often in cold weather, once the brakes get hot, the metal expands and the noise goes away.

    So check if your noise goes away after a 15 minute drive, if it does, it just might be brake pads shifting, which is considered annoying and normal
