Hey, This is my first time for posting here , read a lots questions and answers on here before . Helped a lot

I bought this car with 92K miles .
    2010 Prius
Getting close to 200k miles. It was making noise during start up . I have clean intake manifold, EGR pipe, and mass airflow sensor , And installed new spark plugs, new struts. And new PCV value. Also flushed the break fluid and plan to do coolant flush . Everything’s runs good now ( I was getting misfire code but not anymore).

My question is about transmission fluid, can I change it now with 200k , I don’t think it’s been ever changed? Or should I leave it alone since it probably is very dirty. I have read if you never changed your transmission fluid , it’s not good idea to change it if you got too many miles on hot car .

I red on here on many threads that torque converter is not in a CVT transmission so it’s never a bad idea to change ATF no matter the miles.

I would change it, no hesitation.

Just the EGR pipe? If so, I would clean the valve/cooler assembly as well.

Yaah, I have never worked on a car before. This is the very first time. I thought my car was a lemon . But after reading about it on priuschat, and watching YouTube videos how to do it. It very simple to just to do it yourself and not pay thousands of dollars on it . My car is running so smooth now (knock on wood). I’m gonna order genuine Toyota ATF, not sure about other brands if they are as good As Toyota ws

    Thanks guys

I used Redline D6, have about 8-9 thousand miles on it, works the same. I read people using Valvoline Maxlife ATF as well without a problem.

Either way, the Toyota WS (which is a rebranded light weight ATF) works fine for this transmission, even in extended service.

So we've got your go ahead to use the Toyota ATF WS?

It's as good as the others, that Toyota cautions against using? This is a 2012 Prius v Owner's Manual excerpt, other have similar warnings:

LOL That time I replaced my transmission fluid it took 4.1 qt instead of 3.6 ... I guess YMMV applies. Perhaps "Your Capacity May Vary" too?

Yeah, spec for 3rd gen Prius is 3.5 quarts. Mine's always started overflowing around 3.5~3.6 liters IIRC. That's slightly more in quarts. Maybe you managed a more thorough drain, let it sit a long time? Car was level?

The attachment talks about driving, stopping on level road and rechecking level (after a drain and fill). I did that the first time: there was no discernible difference, dubbed it a waste of time.

I was a part of that irregularly. The hose that I held in place in the fill hole became a dam restricting excess out flow of ATF so 4.1 qt was possible. For a moment I thought ATF defied gravity.

It's worth the extra few dollars for the Toyota brand. Suprised that the manual says "if replacement is necessary..." Isn't there a certain mileage where a transmission fluid change is scheduled?

Toyota says nothing about changing it, deems it lifetime. From my experience, I'd recommend and early change, any time post one year or 10K miles. Then maybe one more around 60K mark. After that who knows, never, or another 60~90K?

My impression was each drain was progressively cleaner, once initial wear was done.
