2008 gen 2 Prius. I've been hearing my brakes make a slight noise when pressing on the brake OR letting off it gently. However, the brake noise isn't loud, or happening all the time, it comes and goes which make me think it isnt too serious. Could it just be dirt and brake oil accumulating in the rotor? Could it be the brake indicator( but the noise isn't loud)? Any ideas? I believe I still have at least 2-4mm on my brake pad and at least 1mm on the back and brake pedal/braking feels solid still. Thanks.

best not to guess with brakes, time for a thorough inspection.

how many miles have you owned her for, and how many miles has the noise been happening?

are you aware of rusty rotor syndrome?

If you hear the noise when you're not moving, it's not related to your rotors. My 2008 makes a squeaky farting noise when I press and release, drives me nuts.

recently bought it, it was at 155k miles no problems mechanically that I know of. However it was used as a family car and parked outside, so that may be for the rustier back rotors.

do you think it could be related to rusty back rotors/brake shoe? any ideas? my problem sounds similar to yours.

We are both in CA and I don't think it's rust. I don't see any. It doesn't interfere with the brake function so I haven't investigated further. It would be nice to get rid of that noise though

Are you familiar with the sound of the brake actuator? You said this is a new car to you, so I'm wondering if you aren't familiar with the brake actuator rattle.

the brake actuator goes off when i press the brake pedal 2-3 times in a row as well as after i turn off my car right? that's more of a machine/automated-like sound which I don't think is the problem i'm hearing. The noise i'm hearing is more like a plastic corrugated hose being squeezed type of sound, but not loud at all, just enough where i can notice it. I usually notice it happening when driving straight so I don't really know where to pin point it, Suspension? some sort of bushing or ball joint?

Yeah, that's not the actuator then. My brakes are pretty scored and make a loud rubbing sound when I'm at low speeds, but not really like you're describing.
