Thank you. Not intuitive at all. Why not just have the same interface as in "awake" mode?

 

I have no way of knowing, but I do subscribe to the reasoning in post 17- a locked phone's screen might come into contact with something other than a willful touch command, if it is in your pocket etc.

 

Well, that does not stand up to reason as there is a way to unwittingly answer the call with that "slide to answer" thing. Android has a slider that if slid to the right answers and if slid to the left rejects the call. It's not super easy to do that by mistake in the pocket and chances are equal of either inadvertent action, but with apple you can only answer inadvertently, which is presumptuous at best. This is one of those Apple things that rubs me the wrong way. Certain decisions are pre-made for the user by the interface without giving choice.

 

I'd agree that it isn't intuitive, but it's darn useful to be able to instantly dismiss an unwanted call by pressing a hardware button twice. No need to remove the phone from your pocket or bag, no distracting light emitted, no need to break eye contact in conversation etc. I do appreciate that.

 

Yup. Just reach in there and either silence or ignore it when you're in a meeting and forgot to flip the little "silence" switch that Android phones don't seem to have. It's super easy. They just need to put the instructions on the screen and then everyone would know how easy it is.

Problem is when you're in a position like mine and you can't ignore unknown calls because so many of them are important. And it's really frustrating when you just get back from living overseas and get your new phone number and almost none of your friends or relatives will answer your calls.

 

My dad used to work for Western Electric (before it became AT&T). I remember we had a rotary phone in our house from the 1920's or '30's made from bakelite. The receiver itself would have made a decent weapon, much like the IBM Model M keyboards. Heavy and dense, much like myself

 

You can do the same in Android. Hitting a power button silences the ringer. That's not my problem. My problem is when I want to screen the incoming number. Often times I get calls from unknown numbers and they tend to be telemarketers, so I have a firm policy of not picking up numbers unfamiliar to me. For this I need to take the phone out of my pocket and look at the caller ID. I get that hitting a hardware button twice is fine, but it is not at all obvious in the interface and it differs from when the phone is not locked. Just an Apple idiosyncrasy that is annoying.

As I have spent almost 4 years with Android I kind of miss it, but I understand that it's just the difference that is bugging me right now, so I am trying to stick with the iPhone past the getting used to it so I can honestly decide which is better. I certainly know which is cheaper! So far I just simply do not see a reason to pay 4x the price except if you think of iPhone as jewelry (they are perty).

Oh and has any of you iPhone people figured out how to connect to a home network file server? I am running a samba share on a Rapberry Pi (that has a 2 Terabyte drive attached to it) on my home network. I store my media there. Would love to know if I can stream music or videos from it to my iPhone.
