Happened to me this morning on 50F start. Thought engine was coming apart. Husband had pulled car in and out of carport last night so car might not have gone through its initial cycle. Have a 2011 Prius IV w/1300 miles on it. Never had this happen with my 2005 Prius. Am taking it to the garage next week for the 1000 mile check up and will give them the Toyota prinout.

Two TSB addressing the engine knocking issue. One to replace engine mount and the other manifold. TSB 0010-12 and TSB 0204-11. I would definitely contact Toyota to have your concern documented so they and the NHTSA is aware of the issue.
I had engine mount replaced and don't think it fixed the issue. Will wait until the weather gets colder to verify.

Mine did it this morning. Cold outside, 50 degrees in the garage where the car was. Mine is a 2013 Prius C IV with only 3100 miles on it. I'll be calling dealer today and will let everyone know what I find.

Boy howdy are you ever right. My dealer said it was normal for the headlights to go out until it was out of warranty then he wanted $800 EACH to replace the bulbs. (Fitagerald in Maryland). When I went to Toyota I found that there was no record from the dealer visits that I ever mentioned a headlight problem so Toyota said it did not happen under warranty. I take mine to a private mechanic now and he either tells me the truth or says he does not know. I generally get good ideas from this website to help. The dealer is not worth the drive over there. I'm getting a new Prius soon and I'm buying from another dealer (Jim Coleman in Maryland). I feel that this will be a much better experience.

How in hell can the heater work before the car starts? The heat comes from the engine burning fuel. This makes NO SENSE to me at all.

you didn't understand what the poster meant. he probably meant engine block heater. we do know that knocking is from lock of proper warm-up cycle on the last shutdown.

also, he is correct on the generator varying the output (responding to misfire) causing the knocking sound in the first place.

I got checked at AutoZone and I got Code P0301. Culinder 1 Misfire or Random Misfire.

Try Lucas Gas treatment. NO I don’t work for Lucas but begin using this product for a while and it turned out to resolve the knocking issue.
