Just in case anyone was curious, when your fuel gauge looks like this

there's still 1.7 gallons left in the tank, according to the gas pump.

Hopefully not 1.7 gallons. If so, by the time the car's a year old I'll only have water in the tank.

Yeah, when the empty gas light comes on, you still have more than 2 gallons left in the tank. I once drove an additional ~100 miles to the nearest gas station but still had almost a gal in the tank to spare. I hoped the car shows negative range on the display, so you know how far you drove after reaching ----miles on the range indicator.

Thanks. This can be useful information for people who might feel the urge to panic shortly after the low fuel light comes on.

    Low fuel light?
    What’s that?
Maybe it’s my pilot mentality but I never let fuel get that low. Never.

thanks, that's good to know. I've driven about 60 miles after it showed zero, not because I wanted too, but because I was driving through east bumm-f**k and it was around 1 in the morning and there was simply no gas stations open anywhere.

    thank god I wasn't driving a top-fuel dragster:
How much fuel does a Top Fuel Dragster use? - Terry McMillen Racing

it gets impressive around 14 seconds. burns up an entire Prius tank in about 2 seconds.

But the real question... how much extra does a Tesla show? When it hits 0 are you screwed or does it keep a reserve for you?

The Saturn V probably does it in nano seconds.
    If it burned gasoline.

I recall reading 1st gen Volt tech notes, and they talked about how 0 was actually 50% remaining charge - it was done to preserve batteries, as we all remember how first Teslas often turned into bricks once discharged. Nowadays with batteries advancements I think much lower, I believein 20...30% range.

I think it's general practice these days to limit charge/discharge to about 85% and 25% respectively. Battery life is greatly extended this way.

I know Teslas have some sort of "reserve" because they activated additional range in Teslas in a hurricane evacuation area not long ago.

Why would anyone want to forcibly prevent other people from discussing anything? That seems so gestapo.

First stage burned kerosene, is that close enough? One note indicates 15 tons per second.

I 90 miles to get to my destination. Total miles left was 75. So I ran the the generator to charge the battery. So while I was driving at 75 miles I was putting my EV miles into the traction battery. Even though I lost some gas mileage I was able to put enough EV to get me home. Said I could be an option just that low fuel warning comes on and you don't have that much battery try using the charger. Oh I drove efficiently to get me home to a gas station.

Gas in HV should have been able to get you home too, without charging for later EV. It has some safety margin built in the to miles-to-empty display.

Using gas to charge the battery for later EV ought not to extend your total available range. If anything, it typically ought to shorten available range slightly, absent special cases. Burning gas to charge the battery involves laundering that energy through more lossy engine conversion processes, vs driving the wheels directly.

When Bob Wilson advocated doing this, it wasn't to extend range, but rather to give more solid warning that end-of-range was coming up shortly, to prompt the driver to make alternate arrangements before truly going dead. Lack of upcoming warning was one of his complaints about the Gen3. At least his Gen1 gave enough warning of impending fuel starvation to look for a wide spot to pull safely off the road, but Gen3 did not.

Alas the gauge just looks digital. The car knows how much fuel it has burned, it just ain't gonna tell you! Pet peave, and not just Primes, Prii or even just Toyota. all gas gauges are not just wrong but terribly non-linear. The top seq stays full a bit long. the next 6 or 7 are pretty good. The last 2 or 3 go pretty quick! You can probably judge how much gas you have left when you have 3 segments left you have prably used 7/10 of you gas and do mental math from there. The DTE follows the gas gauge so you can count down for what it says when you have 3 segments. This only works if the there it is not so hot or cold you have the use the AC, or there are serious mountains to climd or where you are going is at a higher altitude.
