Don't want to detail the battle with my health insurance, but they are insisting I no longer need to be in a nursing home, despite the fact I have no real use of my right arm or leg (another month of intense therapy here and I should be able to stand).

So, I can't bear weight on right arm or leg. I can't violate the 90-degree rule of torso in relation to hip.

Any hints on getting in or out of a Prius to get home. Otherwise it's a few thousand dollar medical transport bill that i would really rather avoid.

Staff here just say use lots of cushions!?! Does not seem like that will work to me.

Looks like I will be kicked to the street on Friday. Anyone with practical experience?

I transported an old woman from church with a cement knee in my v quite successfully.

She had knee replacement, which got staph, so they took out her knee and put in a cement knee until she healed, then did another knee replacement.

3 operations in Memphis, 5 ER visits in Memphis, over 100 Dr visits, in Memphis and Jackson. (both are over 100 miles)

She liked how low the v rode, she did not have to climb into it. I lowered the back, got her In and raised the back as she was able to bend.

Because her knee did not bend, at one point she kicked my heater hose loose under the dash, other than that, it was her best choice.

Antibiotic-impregnated articulating cement spacer for infected total knee arthroplasty

Rental of handicapped van out -- they restrict to pavement only.

Mendel, Smashed acetabular (hip socket), broken femur (lower leg bone) two breaks in upper arm. All on my right side.

Car accident. I was not at fault.

I'm pretty sure you can rent a suitable vehicle. Tall, short, narrow, wide, whatever you're needing for your needs

    Please send picture of car.

Just kidding. I suggest establishing a gofundme for medical expenses.

Oh no. That's terrible! I hope you get the care you need.

What about a wheelchair taxi? You can sit in the chair and get wheeled in the back of the van, just like a rental van, but the taxi driver drives on gravel roads. More expensive than your own car, but cheaper than the medical transport. Just a thought.

As always, thanks for the suggestions; wishes....

Looks as if I may stay another few days at the facility. They won't provide therapy and I will probably have to pay $370 per day out of pocket...but I have a surgeon's followup next week and there is a chance she may relax restrictions -- maybe allowing some weight on leg and/or lifting of the 90-degree restriction.

If,so, I can probably get in a car. Being at home would be blessing and curse. No therapy support, but lots of doggy kisses.

BTW JIMBO gave me an idea. A church has had a van (with handicapped equip) for sale in it's parking lot for a long while They are willing to lend it. We are willing to donate to the church.

I wouldn't want to be standing on one leg around those dogs, they look like they are hungry for attention.

Dogs are excellent at providing therapy, both emotional and physical. Your pack of four will be ready and willing for walks when you are, and will be delighted to provide love and emotional support until then. :)

    Wow...
    Just continued healing.
You're going to have to discover carefully and probably slowly what you become capable of doing.

I was charged with taking care of my ailing Mother and my nursing home bound Grandmother both who had severe physical limitations. Really it was just what they were capable of doing, with or without help, which was a discovery process.

The only tool I remember that helped, with my Grandmother specifically, was something like a Lazy-Susan seat bottom, it was a seat cushion designed to turn. so I could place her on it at 90 degrees, then just turn her into place facing forward. It helped.
    BUT....
I haven't seen them since and I can't even remember where I bought it. However, I googled the term and the product in various forms, still exists. (googled-Lazy Susan Automotive Seat)---they seem to be called swivel seat cushions.

    Good Luck...and continued healing.

One thing is RAV4...they say a lot of older people like RAV4 over Camry because Camry is low to the ground and harder for the older folks to get in. I trying to tell my wife (a Camry fan) she should consider RAV4 but the MPG is stinky vs. Camry hybrid last time I checked.

Sorry about the accident outcome, if I recall that was a Camry

Best wishes on your recovery. Sad to say my Holly and I are on an ER date for a minor hand wound.

Dog jumped out of her lap into the back and a claw put a ~ 1 cm tear in the back of her hand.

10 kg dogs ride in back, not lap, from now on.

Surgeon agreed to relax physical restrictions, will not bore with details, but can do a limited amount of walking per day with a walker and not much else. Very painful and scary to walk. Doing about 10 minutes per hour of shuffling.

Dogs are great. Very tentative and gentle around me and they seem to trade off guard duty. When I sit down. one will sidle up and sit next to me. Eventually that one leaves and is replaced by another hound.

    Good luck.

My brother had similar injuries, and recovery takes time. So be patient.
