$40 labor (which is not taxed here) for milling a duplicate emergency key.

The same technician will not attempt to "pair" a used or non-Toyota key even if it is claimed to be brand-new.

He will, however, "pair" a new key from his own stock, or a new key which was purchased from Toyota.

The worst that can happen, he says, is the process of adding the two keys back into the car (the original one, which worked, and the additional one, with uncertain "provenance") is the security system will be "bricked" (my words, not his), and THEN my only recourse is to have the car transported to a Toyota dealer where two new keys will be sold and logged into the car.

OK, ask a locksmith with Advanced Diagnostics (AD) equipment.

Here is where I read about locksmiths that have paired used fobs; Gen III SKS reprogramming assistance | PriusChat
(lots of good info in the linked thread in the above thread)

I replaced a lost FOB by buying a new un-used FOB ($80) and a mongoose knock-off cable with software ($40) on Ebay. Fifteen minutes of reading up on the procedure on PriusChat and 90 seconds of executing the Add a FOB function and I was back to having 2 fully functional key FOBs. I did not bother to cut the physical key in the new FOB as I have yet to use the key. If I was to cut the key, I would call local locksmiths until I found one that would do it for close to $20

Where did you find a NEW key fob for $80? I'm finding USED ones for $89 and up, with new ones starting at $135. I've been searching all over the web.

I bought it back in 2012 on eBay. There must have been a glut of never paired fobs back then to increase supply and drive the price down. I could not find any oem never paired 2010+ Prius fobs under $135 on eBay. Just glad I got mine when I did.

I wouldn't want to spend the extra $55 either, but if that's the current going rate, spend it and you'll have a lot of piece of mind once you have that extra working FOB. Don't sit around waiting for the price to come down (yes, easy for me to say, but if you lose the FOB without a replacement, you'll be spending a lot more money than $135 and a lot more time getting the new FOB made).

Fob must be new / virgin / reset for X-100 to add it to car. If fob has been previously paired to another car you'll need a different tool.

    Hello everyone,

    My story:
Bought 2010 used Prius; Dealer gave me just one smart key. After 2 years of driving, have found out, on this forum, that if only key will be lost would have to pay Toyota dealer around $500 (+ car towing) for new key programing. My solution was: bought on Ebay aftermarket virgin smart key for $95, asked my local mechanic if he can program additional smart key. He said he never done that, but he has AUTEL tool, which supposed to do key programing too. Offered me to come and try for free. So did I :)) and now I have second registered smart key. It was a meter of few minutes. And yes, I am not an IT person, but I start and finish programming smart key just all by myself, mechanic provided just AUTEL tool.

Thank you guys and thanks to my mechanic I have second smart key just for $95.

Correct, many of the higher end Autel tools can program new or virginized fobs. If the fob is just "used", you need a different tool/procedure to do a seed/passcode reset on the car.

Don't forget to have the slide-out mechanical key cut otherwise you won't be able to get into the car when the fob or cars 12v battery fails.

Which Autel tool? Hopefully not this beast?

Geesh I just remember stopping by the shoe repair place: they put your key in the duplicate machine, you hand them $5. But we progress, lol.
