    Hey everyone,

    2008 Prius touring w/ 180k miles.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I love this place and appreciate all of the help with other issues I’ve had. Anyways have been reading about my problem on here for a few hours and haven’t found an answer.

The RTOD, vsc, check engine, and the circle with ! Is on. The car seems to run fine,

I used my generic ZURICH scanner and found 0 DTC codes so I erased it and have been driving it all week. It turns on randomly every 50-100 miles but I’ve just been erasing it for now since I have to be able to get to work.

    I’m getting 35-40mpg

I got a new 12v battery and an oil change but that didn’t fix anything.

My hv battery will go from green to purple if I go steep uphill for more than a minute or two so maybe it’s going bad?

Also when the triangle comes on the fan in the rear passenger side come on.

    Thanks guys

    Welcome to PriusChat!!
This car has at least one major problem, and is trying to alert you. Do you have a copy of the owners manual?
You have a bunch of xmas lights illuminated on the dash, which means there are actual codes to be read. Erasing the codes before you read them won't help tell you whats wrong with the vehicle, only after you have written down the codes should you erase them.

You need to locate/rent/borrow/buy a hybrid compatible OBD2 code reader. Try any major auto parts chain and have them read the DTC codes for free, if their reader also finds nothing go to another store (same chain store or a new one) and try again until you can have the codes properly read and recorded.

You might also consider purchasing an appropriate reader for yourself, $2 or less will get you a bluetooth ODB2 reader that can connect to a droid product. $20 will get you a mini-vci cable and techstream, which will require a laptop. Then there is the dealership, mine scans for free, though most don't. Or just keep on rolling and resetting until that day comes.

General signs of a hv battery that isn't healthy.
Tell tale sign that the battery has finally given up the ghost, the fan came on to protect it from overheating. When was the last time you checked or cleaned the HV fan?

Do you already have a plan to fix the HV battery?

Thanks for the awesome reply. I knew something was wrong I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t something easy to fix before locating scanners. I only drove it a few days knowing at any point it would likely die. Anyways I located a mobile battery guy who came to my work, checked the codes (it was a bad hv battery), and swapped it out with a refurb. It was $1000 and has a 1 year warranty. 2 guys showed up and did it in 20-30 minutes.

Yes definitely let us know how it goes with the rebuilt battery. I would suggest you start saving for a longer term solution. Like a new battery from either the dealer or 2K1TOASTER. Do you have any mechanical skills? Could you do the work in this video?

Both new battery options would require you to get close to this level of repair.

I'm having the same issue with my 07. The Red triangle and problem note come up but then they only stay for 15 seconds.

I took it in to get the code read at the dealership and they couldn't find anything (after charging $160 for diagnostics)

Wouldnt they catch if the 12v had low output in a multipoint inspection?

An easy way to check battery voltage would be to press the on button twice with your foot OFF the gas. Then hold the “info” button while turning the headlights on and off three times. The display will open a diagnostic thing and in there you can see the voltage. You’ll have to search for what menu it’s in but it’s in there. It should be 12.4v+ (don’t know the exact #). Maybe it’s dropping while driving and makin the light come on?

Did they check the oil level in the multipoint inspection? Have you checked it? If you haven't, do it now and don't drive the car until you do. If there is no oil discernible on the dipstick, add 1 qt of 5W-30 oil at a time (waiting 5 minutes and checking the dipstick between each qt) until you see oil showing between the top and bottom marks (dimples) on the dipstick.
Depends on how thorough the person doing the inspection is. Most would not do any testing that would find anything but a battery on its very last legs.
