2010 Prius with about 210k miles. A year ago it started making a noice when it was moving slowly (10 or 15 mph) and you slightly applied the gas. From what i remember it was when the motor kicked in. sounded like something was loose and slapping around. I asked the dealer but they couldn't hear the noice.

This morning, the noice got significantly worse. I turned around to carry the car back home and it wouldn't accelerate. Then it went into battery only mode and the noice went away. When I ran out of battery, the motor noice started again and sounded terrible. Turned the car off and then back on to try and get it out of the road. Managed but it would barely move. Got it towed home and looked at it this afternoon. I can't get the ICE to turn on, just says check hybrid system. I put it on jack stands to check the cv joints but they dont appear to be tore up or anything. When turning the tires, there does seem to be a odd noice but it may just be the gears catching from the slack in the trans.

What should I do first? Would like to do as much as possible myself to save the cost at the dealership.

    Thanks,

Before we continue further, it's engine NOISE. Not noice

Engine not starting, you should have some codes

Sometimes I type too fast and don't spell check, plus i suck in general at spelling....

Engine has been running fine before this. It does use oil like most 2010s. Can someone send me a link or tell me how to check the codes on this?

You could take the time to get the S/W, and an OBD2 adapter as some will suggest...or you could just get it to the Dealership in the morning. Time is your variable here.

Got some updates. Checked the codes, had multiple codes for misfire, P3190 (poor engine power) and P0a80 (replace hybrid pack).
I assumed the misfire caused the poor engine power, and the battery overheated while i was driving in battery only mode (i have never cleaned the fan.

So today I replaced the coils and plugs and reset the codes and started it up. I still have the noise going on, so I checked the throttle body and it had some oil in the bottom of it but it didn't really look bad. I checked out the battery fan and it was a little dusty but not bad at all. I cleared the codes again, and put the car in drive (I have it on some blocks) and noticed something (I will upload a video on YouTube). The engine shakes back and forth and acts like something is locked up. Then all of a sudden it stopped making the noise, the engine stopped shaking and wheels accelerated. Then it started back again. To me, this sounds like something in the transmission is seized up and making the engine struggle to turn the wheels. I saw a few videos with some damper issues and was wondering if it could be broke or have an issue. I am uploading the video now, once its done I will post the link.

Wow ! With the motor knocking like that, it will be knocking a big hole out of your wallet!!!

How's the maintenance on your Prius? You mentioned some light knocking started about one year go(n), small problem $ may become big problem $$$$. Please refer to post #2.

Hope for the best, and expect the worst my friend.

I carried it to the dealer about the small knocking (about a year ago) and they said they couldn't hear the issue i was talking about. I have done regular oil changes at the dealer (last year or so started going to a regular oil change place). Have had the dealer do multiple other maintenance items on the car but I can't remember what they were.

I have however figured out what the issue was and have fixed most of it. Video said the P3190 code is usually something not running right on the engine, and the shaking is actually the starter turning over the motor but its not actually running. So since i replaced most of the spark part of the equation and the air filter and intake looked clean, i popped open the fuel filter. There was at least a gallon maybe two of water in the tank. So i siphoned the water out of the tank, installed the fuel pump back in the car and got the fuel lines cleaned out. Car runs fine now while I am on the gas pedal. when I let of the pedal, it goes back to jumping but not nearly as bad. Threw a code for misfire on #2. I'm thinking I need to replace the fuel filter (maybe the pump also since its attached to the filter). Added a bottle of HEET to it and will try to put a few more miles on it to see if it clears up. Any other ideas?

That sounds like a blown head gasket. I’d bet your coolant tank is low, or empty.

Hi its not big issue you just need to strip the 4 parts clean and put it back together as you are getting a code of misfire its definitely the engine is clogged up and you need to clean the EGR VALVE, EGR COOLER, THROTTLE BODY AND INTAKE MANIFOLD (don't forget to change the gasket)once you cleaned them and put it back together your engine will be normal. If you need more help please let me know as I have done this on 5 cars. I will try to attach the picture of most recent job.

This cleaning was carried out at 100000miles and my experience so far is satisfactory in terms of oil consumption. So far 3000miles and engine oil is still full.
