My son is working overseas for a few months and I have his 2008 Prius. I am not very familiar with it but try to drive it every couple of weeks. I notice the gas engine is constantly running when the car is moving but will stop if the car stops, like at a stop light, then start again when the car starts moving. I this normal?

Yep, that jolt feels weird and you might think it will explode but that's normal, also the engine goes on more frequently if you are idling and have the A/C on, to charge the HV battery.

Sometimes the engine won’t start until you get to a higher speed. That’s normal too. Hopefully if your only driving it every couple of weeks your giving it a workout. 20-30 miles.

Thanks for the replies. Car has about 180,000 miles. Learned my lesson this winter when I didn't drive it for a few weeks and the 12volt battery went dead. Charged it a couple times but it kept draining so I replaced it. Found lots of useful information on this site. Thanks.
