Yeah, entitled to selfishness at the expense and even death of others.

There are still poisonous mine slag dumps left over from the original California Gold Rush.

But Big Corporations still try to make a case for looser regulations.
If they had their way, those poisons would still be flowing into our water supply today.
I am somewhat skeptical that maybe they still ARE in some cases.

Actually, toyota changed the oil change intervals up to 10k miles now. But i change mine around 8000 cause thats when i feel my prius starts to run a little sluggish. And that's with the mobil 1 0w-20 advanced fuel economy.

When i used to run the stock toyota oil, it would only last me 3-4k miles per oil change because thats when it starts to run a little sluggish.

I used stock toyota oil for my first 100k miles, and I just recently switched to mobil 1 fuel economy and its a big difference. I could just tell my prius run better in it and its a lot smoother, quieter and long-lasting.

Huh, but my car was programmed to remind me to change the oil at 5K miles. Why did they change from 5K to 10k? Sorry but I will follow the car’s reminder. CAFE is a law that could care less if our cars all burn oil or not.

Isn’t the 5k reminder for tire rotation, fluid check, and vehicle inspection, sans severe use conditions?

It is now if you follow the 10k miles interval. Originally it was for all the above and oil changes every 5K miles. Then Toyota changed their minds. Free maintenance offer from Toyota and CAFE laws changed all that IMO.

I think you should just rename your car an Alfa Romeo, which normally consumes that much oil when brand new (per Factory Spec on my new, at the time, 1987 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde). Enjoy the new ride, har, har!!

Toyota USA changed to 10K miles (or 12 months, whichever comes first), with Prius model year 2010. Toyota Canada stayed with 5K miles* (or 6 months, whichever comes first), till Prius model year 2016, when they adopted the longer US interval.

Toyota Australia IIRC says 10K kms or 6 months, whichever comes first.

Ultimately: you're the owner, can do what you want. If you want some justification for shortening the interval, look at the criteria for "extreme service" which doubles the oil change frequencies.

With my Canadian 2010, months governs by a wide margin, but I still change the oil and filter every 6 months.

    * Actually 8K miles, same thing.

    Thanks.

I mentioned that the TBN for Mobil 1 0W-40 was increased from 11.x to 12.6. The Total Base Number determines how much buffer you have against acids produced from combustion. As far as I understand this determines how long an oil can last without being changed. If you look at Amsoil Signature Series specs they have a TBN of 12.5, and Amsoil provides some sort of engine warranty for 25k miles, or 1 yr, whichever comes first. Mobil also provides a warranty, provided you change the oil per vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation or 1 yr, whichever comes first. Mercedes oil change interval, similar to Toyota, is 10k miles.

I don’t know which is true, but either Amsoil is stretching it, or Mobil is playing it safe.....

Still, I have a hard time buying, that an oil is fine, fine, fine, then suddenly: not fine. I would think it changes gradually, commencing right from the start of service.

If you think of it in terms of acid/base chemistry, then it makes sense as the buffer is used up the oil is fine, when the buffer is completely gone the oil turns acidic. Then it makes sense in terms of that. I’m not a chemist nor an engine expert, so I can’t say beyond that simplistic view. Still waiting for someone who has the unique situation to drive 25k miles/year, uses Amsoil oil, and has some sort of failure, to show up. (I haven’t searched for this actually. Maybe I should)....

(That simplistic view I was taught when I took Amsoil training)....

No it isn't (probably depending on the model).

The 5K maintenance reminder is for TIRE ROTATION.
Your "recommended" oil change interval likely is different.
But it won't hurt to do both around 5K.

No true. When the 2010 came out it was for oil changes and other services.

That is exactly what is recommend and in the manual for our 2012 Prius V. 10k mile oil change. Back then, they wouldn’t change your oil if it was over a year old unless you hit the 10k mile mark. That only applied to the free 2 year service.
