You can get a tilt sensor fitted or after market alarm for between £400-£500 it is for peace of mind if your cars within distance of you hearing the alarm you maybe be able to save it but I don’t think passers by would be interested in an alarm ringing. For example you hear a burglar alarm ringing in someone’s home what do you do most people walk past. To the thief it may act as a deterrent yes.

Also I rang around and found not many installers willing to work on the Prius not sure why.

Also when you park in super market try to park between two cars so making it awkward to jack it cos they lift from one side not centre. Parking in those wide bays I think is risky.

Don’t think so did you watch the video I posted they stole the convertor in broad day light in the owners drive while the owner was in the property? They blocked the door so owner would not come out. Besides with two or three of those guys would you want to chance injury to your self ?

You are absolutely right about the people no one cares that what is going around them. Do you know any place where I can get the tilt sensor and I would try to fit it myself as I have manage to do lots of modifications in Prius. Once done I will be able to share my DIY experience. Thanks

Got my catalytic converter stolen on my gen2 prius last night in hackney london. Car started very loudly and the red triangle , engine light and VSC lights are also on. Further, after a third turn on and off the engine will no longer run at all.

Got a tow by the AA to the local garage. and quoted £750 for the fix.

I feel like I want to sell my prius now if they are being preferentially targeted by thieves as im forced to park it away from my flat on the street and there is no defence.

    UPDATE

Has anyone had their cat stolen twice? Im wondering if the crime gang doing this wont re-target vehicles since its the original cats that are valuable?

Very sorry to hear about this. I was hopeful it was dying down as I'd not heard about any lately, but it seems it is still on-going.

    Makes me so angry!! :(

This thread has been going on for nearly eight months now, a lot of 'victimless" crimes. Like a gushing tap, that no one gets around to shutting.

    "No one" being the constabulary.

Anyone have press connections? There have been stories in the news, but maybe a fresh update on this would help?

It should be absurdly easy to track them down, where they sell them?

Garage I took my Prius to in Hackney said hes done 5 replacements in the past week. My guess is it is still going on alot but unless people post about it on here then you dont hear about it

Im definitely getting rid of my Gen2 now if they are being preferentially targeted. Its a shame as I love it to bits.

Sounds like it’s so common now the shops keep the parts in stock. Like you would keep motor oil.

Here in So Cal, it was pretty popular for awhile. The market seems to go to the need of the vehicles needing replacement parts. It was Prius's now its Honda's

Sorry to hear you’ve become a victim of this dreadful crime

Don’t sell your Prius if you REALLY love driving it.

Fact: The thieves WANT the OEM CAT only - it’s about £1,800 if you were to purchase the original OEM CAT from Toyota.

Get yourself a compatible Klarius CAT for a fraction of that cost, get your Prius back on the road and keep and enjoy it
Compatible CATS work just as well, I have a Klarius installed. No problems whatsoever.

As far as I am aware NOBODY has had their replacement non OEM CAT stolen. If this ever happened at all, it would have been a mistake on the part of the thieves.....they specifically want the old OEM CAT because it’s internal matrix core is made entirely of precious metals, primarily Platinum. The latter is what they are mining from under the 2nd Gen Prius vehicles.

The replacement CATs have very little of these precious metals - the core is primarily ceramic - that the RISK simply isn’t worth their while.

There’s the slim chance some illiterate crackhead copycat might get wind of the Portable Platinum Mine OEM CAT under a Prius (in a few years when this scandal DOES hit the press) and suddenly decide to embark on a get rich quick scheme - but the sod will be disappointed, after vandalising a few Prii and discovering he’s got nothing!.......It may never happen.

Repair your Prius, fit a security solution to the replaced CAT if you’re worried, and get your money’s worth out of your vehicle.

You will hate yourself IF you sell just because of these scumbags.

And you’ll detest a standard ICE car even more!

I was gonna sell my 2008 Tspirit because of this dreadful crime wave, and purchase a 2012 Toyota Auris Hybrid instead.
I’m glad I didn’t succumb to that knee jerk reaction.

I’m still driving my 2nd Gen Prius Tspirit!

    Hi all,

Wow! Cannot believe how many victims of this crime there have been.

Had my CAT stolen few days back while parked up in Tesco's at 3pm! RAC guy said it's the third he's attended to this week!

Thanks for the advice on the Klarius compatible one. I was also thinking of selling my 2008 Prius but it's been such a good car that I would hate to lose it.

I wonder where all these CATs are ending up? Wish the yards would stop accepting the scraps.

    Victimless crimes indeed.
Both the shameless Govt and the Constabulary are grossly disrespecting the citizens of the UK by cynically trying to browbeat them into believing that this level of crime in the UK is now entirely acceptable.

It’s like they’re saying “This is the 21st century, get used to it”.

Of course they could track these slimy parasites and apprehend the lot of them if they wanted to, but.....I guess this is all part of a bigger plan.

Namely destabilise the country through insidious political decisions so evil, they could have only been imagined by a Dark Lord of the Sith hiding under the banner of a politician.....oh wait...!!!

Once it’s destabilised badly enough, and the citizens are in complete disarray (read dying like flies from unbridled violent crime), introduce new measures to rescue the country from the unprecedented crime spree by introducing new powers and legislation to beef up law enforcement and take away the few liberties ordinary citizens have.

Among the new measures will be a huge corporate organisation that will be taking over law enforcement - we’ll call it OCP

OCP will stick its fingers in every business pie where there’s a profit to be made. From City Transport to the National Health Service to running corporate jails where the inmates serve their sentencing slaving in factories owned by......(drum roll...!!!) OCP.

Crime will be tackled with such a ferocity, ordinary citizens will be ending up doing 3 months “OCP Chinese Factory Time” sentences for really minor infractions like jay-walking . They’ll even be priced off the road by OCP. Then priced out of London too.

There’ll be CCTV cameras everywhere.....and I DO mean everywhere. OCP will be totted as creating jobs for the masses. Very lowly paid barely sustenance providing jobs that will be quickly taken up by the truly desperate and hungry!

The expression “throw the baby out with the bath water” will spring to mind.

This will all happen because of the UK leaders obsession with privatising everything while as a cure to their gross incompetence.
OCP will be super rich. We will all continue to suffer.

Don’t laugh.....we already have a completely dysfunctional) organisation that partially fulfils a similar role.

    It’s called Capita!

I'm telling ya... park it over a mud puddle. Or a pit of quicksand. Or a tiger trap if you've got a shovel and some time.

Then weld a strip of steel under the exhaust pipe to make the assembly wider than the jaws on the cutting tool- or longer than the reciprocating saw blade if that's what they're using in your area. They could still get it, but now it's going to take more than two cuts. They'll move on.

The garage who fixed mine do about 5 per week. All for the same catalytic converter theft. All Gen 2 Prius. Mine was the only Gen 1 they have ever had. There were two Gen 2s sitting in the car park as I arrived.

The recovery guy told me that when he is called out and hears the car is a Prius he can almost guarantee the problem will be a stolen cat - as (in his words) the Toyota Prius simply never breaks down - unless it is interfered with.

To my knowledge no Prius has been re-attacked. As already mentioned they're after the original factory fitted CATS. The shifty shits turn their noses up at the after-market jobs .... we are hoping that continues. Well I am hoping that the Police will get off their behinds and do something, but I won't hold my breath.

BIB I have heard of other Prius cars being mugged. Not just on this thread. I read other places and it is dropping off a little, but as your post proves they are still being taken.

I curse all the CAT theives and wish them nothing but ill fortune.

I have a feeling that most of them end up in Eastern Europe. Melted down and shipped out. Not all though - there may be some unscrupulous scrapers in the UK still taking them, but IMO most are shipped out.

Sorry to hear about your car. :(

Wow I thought it was the end of this this is crazy unfortunately there are scrap dealers offering cash for catalytic converters I have reported them to the authorities but not heard anything back. I presume they are understaffed. They are still able to monitor social media for strange comments etc.

The case for after market ones getting stolen it does happen your not immune with after market part. The reason is that to someone who wants to make a quick buck they will take it even if they discard it it’s no loss to them 2/3 minutes worth of work.

As for getting rid of the car it depends on the value I have seen on Facebook someone selling Prius without cat for £2500 with about 100k on clock. You would need to look at it this way a used car from someone else may need few things sorted eventually or maybe immediately things like tyres, servicing etc if you already got decent tyres recent service etc would you want to get rid of it your not going to recoup that money.

I would suggest considering physical lock of some sort or a cage welded or bolted on and maybe a tilt sensor alarm as factory fitted does not have a tilt alarm. If it’s jacked up it will set the alarm off. Not sure if anyone will actually want to interfere with these crooks if the alarm is ringing but for your own peace of mind if you hear it ringing you can run and let the jack down accidentally of course.

Also a dash cam maybe a deterrent however don’t hold much hope of using the footage to catch them if it’s stolen as in the past cctv evidence has been provided and not been used by the authorities for whatever reason.

Also when you parking in Tesco or other stores park in between two cars if possible to reduce the working space for jacking the car. Avoid the mother and child spaces if your able to use those in the first place.

Don’t think there is much else that can be done unless you sleep in the car or garage it.
