Plug In Battery Replacement

    Best choice would be to have a chat with companies who replace cells on nickel batteries. They may be able to do the same on lithium batteries as well. It can't harm asking. I know that if that's possible at all then it would be alot less than replacing the whole battery.

    Actually, as battery expert, we don't suggest ppl use power Li-type battery to replace power Ni-MH battery if they would like to use the original BMS system. BMS manage Ni-MH and Li- battery is quite difference. Like the former one, BMS control battery as per the voltage; for Li battery, by control capacity. But if you would like to try. Please take care of your car.

    Because you can't store lithium battery's without charging them at least once every 6 months and now with experience
    changing the battery takes one hour and less

    Interesting!!! It sounds like you have the possibility of the three batteries lasting perhaps 30 years or something like that. If the theory holds true anyway, and it seems likely to me.

    It would be nice if @jeff652 came up with a grid charger for the big lithium batteries. But with the flammability of Lithium, I would not blame him if he was reluctant. Not that it could not be done safely, but if one did catch fire for any reason, you know who'd get blamed. ;)

    My 2012 Prius Plug in is only charging to 8.4 miles. It never goes up to the 12 mile range when we first bought it used. The battery is covered under warranty still. I just want to know if anyone else has had issues? Im trying to educate myself before I go into the delaership and battle.

    @bisco has had a PiP since new. I know he has had a little battery degradation.

    Mine has gone from 12.x last summer to 10.2. That 10.2 was a new high yesterday for these recent months coming off of winter. Temps are around 60°, so I'm disappointed it isn't higher at this point. My driving is very conservative as before, non-highway miles.

    couple things:

    you're in cali, but the weather may be colder than normal?

    how many miles on her?

    how much the dash charge shows is less important than how far you can travel on ev.

    take a ride on 30 mph roads with no hvac and as few stops as possible until the engine comes on.

    report back here with the distance.

    dealer is not going to do anything without trouble lights. the manual states that range loss is normal, and not covered under the warranty.

    fwiw, i've lost about 15% ice new, and most of that was in the first couple years.

    This last winter was the first where I was consistently showing under 10 miles for starting range. The degradation is pretty evident at this point, but still very usable.

    Considering the C rates of these things and sheer number of charge cycles, it isn't surprising. From a charge cycle perspective my 32k+ EV miles on my PiP is the equivalent of my Tesla doing 600k miles. I think I'd be seeing some degradation at that many miles as well.

    We had our 2012 Plug-in Prius for 7 years. Based on actual driving range, we lost about ~20% of useable capacity during that time.*

    Great vehicle with a humble EV battery.



    *Our 3 year old leased Leaf has not done so well with degradation, even with battery replaced under warranty a year ago.

    The battery can deteriorate a LOT before it will prevent the car from functioning. My guess is that the car will still run fine if range drops to even two miles... but we’ll see.

    I have a 2014 PIP with 105,000 miles, and I live in Minnesota and drive and charge it daily. Sometimes I plug it in multiple times a day if I take short trips. I typically get 10-12 miles per charge even in winter. I have an attached garage so in winter the lowest temperature is about 25 degrees Celsius. I like the car and my lifetime MPG is somewhere over 55 based on the Toyota mpg meter. So I would like to keep a long while and hope either the batteries outlast me or there is a replacement for the plug in battery like there is for the hybrid one. I had hoped the larger capacity Prime battery might work but based on comments in this string it likely will not.
