I have a new, 2018 Prius Prime Premium (first time Prius owner and I love the car so far) and I'm having an odd Bluetooth issue. About 70% of the time when I start the car I have no Bluetooth connection. If I restart the car, or reboot the entertainment system (hold Audio button for 3 sec) I can usually get the connection back (but sometimes it takes 2 times). If I don't have a connection and go to the Bluetooth settings page it tells me "Bluetooth module not connected".

I have a Google Pixel phone, but I'm not sure that would have anything to do with it. If I try to connect to the car while I have this error, the phone will not see it at all and will not connect.

I've only had the car for a week so I have no way of knowing if this will get worse or if it is a recent problem caused by new software.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I don’t have a solution, but wanted to confirm I am having exactly the same issue w/ my Prime (2017). We use iPhones so it is definitely an issue with the car not the phones. It is persistent, we have had the car almost a year, but it doesn’t seem to be getting worse. Mostly just annoying.

I got a message for an Entune update the other day and I downloaded it. I don't know if it has anything to do with bluetooth or not but I wan't having any problem before. Contact your dealer, chances are it is a known issue.

Same thing happen with me also, all android phones with older version connect very easily. But version with 5.0 lollipop & higher versions don't connect. Just go to car retailer & tell themto change the software for you. That could work.

That update was for Entune applets only. There was a release for many models at the same time, including our Camry and my 4Runner.

I’m having the same issue in my brand new Prime Premium. Taking it in today to have specialist team from Japan look at it. I’ve been told it sounds like it needs a new head unit. I’ll report back once I know

Not sure if this may be causing an issue. I have an iPhone X. I also had WiFi calling enabled. When I would try to make a call, the head unit would reboot and it would give a Bluetooth module not connected error. I disabled the WiFi calling and it seemed to help. I haven’t had the issue since.

    iPhone ?

It is now July 24, 12 days since I took the car in to have the bluetooth issue examined. I've been told they no longer think it's a hardware problem but rather a software problem. There is no solution at the moment and they can't give me an anticipated ETA. I will be sending the link to this thread to my contact at Toyota so he can see it is not a problem unique to my car. Stay tuned for further developments.

July 26 update: I had made an appointment to go to the dealer to test my phone an iPhone 7 Plus in a different 2018 Prius Prime. I received a phone call to bring my car in on the 26th when the Toyota representative I'd been dealing with would be there. Instead of testing my phone on a different car, he ran different diagnostics on my car and discovered a bluetooth module error had been identified. He checked for a solution in the documentation on his computer and lo and behold the solution is to replace the head unit. No other solution was presented. He promised to order the part and I will be notified when it arrives at t he dealership. He said it would take about a week to get it. I'll update once it's been installed.

Here is the follow up from July 26th. The head unit part arrived at the dealer on August 9th. It took 2 weeks to come from California. Install was scheduled for the August 15th. The new head unit was installed and the car returned to me the end of the day. I'm happy to say the bluetooth connection now works the way it is supposed to and my phone connects as soon as I get into the car. Hope this helps anyone else experiencing the problem. Regards, Michael Pearson

    Good Morning All -

Brand new Prime Premium owner here. While we have been very happy with the car overall (although it has taken some getting used to...), regrettably my first post is in regards to a problem.

We have had the car for just under 2 weeks now, and for the entire time have experienced the bluetooth connection issues described by others in this thread. The car simply does not connect to a phone when it is initially started, whether my wife's or mine (both iPhone 7's, FTR). As others have stated, the car will often, though not 100% of the time, make the connection if it is restarted within a short time. Otherwise, nothing. I have tried removing and repairing the phones a few times, as well as "rebooting" the head unit by holding the audio button to no avail.

Has anyone other than Michael Pearson had success in resolving this issue? I have a service appointment for Saturday morning, but I'm hopeful that this isn't going to require replacement of the head unit. Would appreciate any recent feedback or experience that others can share.

    Thanks!

Update for anyone who is interested...

So literally as I was typing this, I received a call from the dealership. They have diagnosed an internal fault within the head unit and it is being replaced. I'm told it will take 3-5 days for it to arrive. Fingers crossed that this solves the problem and we experience a properly functioning system, going forward. I will keep this thread updated.

Head unit has been replaced as of last Thursday and seems to be operating properly.

    Cheers!

I purchased my 2017 Prius Prime used from a non Toyota dealer earlier this year, no other dealers had any available locally, still covered under manufacturer warranty, same issue with both my iPhone 6s+ and now my iPhone 11. I doubt they are going to admit a fault in the head unit now, let alone replace it.

If there is warranty coverage remaining, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the possibility of a replacement head unit, as long as there is a stored diagnostic trouble code (DTC), such as B15B7, Bluetooth Module Malfunction.

Dealers might shy away from extensive troubleshooting, but they should be willing to follow the simple procedure in the Repair Manual (more info), which says to clear the DTCs, and if DTC B15B7 returns, to replace the head unit, also called the Navigation Receiver Assembly. The replacement head unit is likely to be a refurbished part, so the actual cost to Toyota would be modest, and if the dealer reports the stored DTC on the repair order, Toyota is unlikely to dispute the warranty claim.

This is one of the few situations in which the head unit’s diagnostic mode, described in a previous thread, is useful, since you can check for stored head unit DTCs without using a Toyota Techstream diagnostic system. Don’t clear the DTCs, of course, since the dealer will need to see them.
