The only time I use ECO now is if I'm driving with the AC on. Otherwise, I find Normal the best mode because of the reasons you stated above.

With our previous HCHII I found CC detrimental to mileage, but with our current Prius I'm won over. In particular on highways, I'll start CC and watch the instant mileage (displayed on ScanGage) drop down (liters per 100 km), and stay down pretty consistantly. Of course it will climb on upgrades, but the CC's programing seems pretty good, I don't think I could improve on it.

I'm not an accomplished hypermiler though.

I've been thinking about that, for the last day, doing a fair bit of in-town driving. Technically I think you're right, but: the Prius is offering electric-only propulsion, and if you've lifted off the gas and the engine's shut down, gentle pressure will give you that.

I keep an eye on the bar in the HSI display: if it's just a little bit at the left end you know you're extending the glide with next to no battery expenditure. If it starts to climb, getting near the middle (where the gas engine will kick in), then I'll purposefully push down harder, start the engine and do another pulse.

I'll also weigh the state of charge when deciding if I should continue electric-only or push harder/start the engine. If the battery's near topped up I'm more likely to stretch the electrical only.

No, it doesn't. You can accelerate at any rate in any mode.

The rate of acceleration for pulse and glide is not actually that high. 1/2 between the eco bar and the power bar or thereabouts.

This is actually where ECO mode helps. Little throttle is easier with ECO mode, though of course it can be done in any mode.

ECO mode's main purpose is to regulate and make the throttle less sensitive to pedal movement... along with obviously controlling the A/C as well to not run as powerful if ECO mode is on.

whereas, yes... mashing the accelerator into the PWR area on the HSI will indeed negate any ECO mode setting... I don't really like to accelerate up to speed in that area... more the 75-90% section on the HSI.

at which if you've tried accelerating on the Prius C with and without the ECO mode on.... there's a noticeable difference in acceleration.. because holding the HSI at 75% while ECO mode is on... the car gets up to speed a lot slower than without.

for the most part, that lack of sensitivity in pedal control that ECO mode places on the vehicle is something I rather not prefer... so that's a personal preference that some people may or may not agree on.

also with how people drive and with their conditions... ECO mode may.. or may not help improve their mileage... as people say.. YMMV.

Incorrect. The remapping keeps ALL values. The throttle is NOT less sensitive pedal movement. It just has the response remapped so that there is more fine control at earlier pedal movement, and correspondingly less at later pedal movement.

Nope. The eco remapping is still there. If it weren't there would be a discontinuity somewhere in the pedal travel (which would be disconcerting).

If you are driving on the freeway most of the time you're only supposed to expect 46mpg per Toyota's advertising. Your city driving of 1/3 is where your mileage would improve. The epa estimates are backward on the C... My comute is about the same as yours and I hang right around 51 or so mpg overall.

You are complaining about a problem that does not exist. Your Avalon got 23 miles per gallon. Your first tank in a Prius C got better than 50. One tank is nothing. After 5 fill-ups report back.

I average 53-59 mpg per tank if driving city only. I get 42-43 mpg if driving 80 mph. at 60 mph I get as high as 58 mpg. I drive more hwy than city but my lifetime average is slightly above 50 mpg.
