Horse and buggy got well beyond 1000 miles per gallon of gas. In fact, you could buy one gallon of gas for the lifetime of the horse.

If you want to have the auto industry set the standard based on a top speed of about 30mph and a payload of about 400 pounds, no power off the line, no AC, the modern car could average much better. They could get away with a pretty small motor on a car that would out perform the Model T.

Now that the world has the technology for 50+ mpg for 90% of the fellow commuters in the major cities of America, I can't for the life of me figure out why someone doesn't figure out a way to get these people in one of these cars. Put 1 million Prius into chicagoland in 2007, another million in LA, another in NYC, another million in Boston, another million in Dallas...

Raise the current commuter mpg by at least double in these areas.

Some people on the tollway need their van to do their plumbing job. I'd still say that 80 or 90% are like me.. just one person in a car going to a job and back.

Did my first 600+ mile tank with mfd at 61.5mpg today... 22k miles on the car.

Yeah... anti-hybrid people like to use the 80s as a basis of good mileage. They'll compare the Prius to an 80s Civic or Integra or Corolla.

Except that those cars had super thin doors, no power accessories whatsoever, optional A/C, no airbags, no fancy electronics (TCS/VSC/ABS), smaller, had less powerful engines, and had horrible emissions compared to today's vehicles.
