a lot of cars are stolen every year. there's a lot more to worry about than hacking. look at catalytic converters in london

 

And PRIUS Gen4 has 2 Catalytic Converters.

 

Not as easy to get at as the Gen 2, SWMBO had hers stolen a couple of weeks ago. Pick up, SUV, truck and van cats are also more accessible due to their high ground clearance. Many companies are fitting protective stainless steel barriers around the cats to make theft more difficult.

 

Most successful breaches of computer security is likely because an authorized user was careless or tricked.

 

the amount of platinum in the puny Prius exhaust systems are nothing compared to the monster size catalytic converter in Toyota pickup trucks & others. A thief would really be stupid to pull a Sawzall or angle grinder out for such a small return versus risk.
Catalytic converter, like Fob security risk, is puny in the big picture. Many new vehicles are now internet-connected, where you can get some really good mischievious action going. That's why Tesla, as an example, pays good bounty money to many super software hackers. 99 our of 100 times - these smart folk not only make good money, but they keep the systems secure.

Aw, c'mon!! Let's be honest about it. Of this who might know how to drive a Gen 4, how many might want to steal one?

Seriously - I doubt that a PRIUS is the target of most thieves. They tend to look for more "normal" cars which won't be spotted in a hurry.

That said, in the last year or 2, there was a Renault Megane RS BRIGHT YELLOW, and a Nissan SKYLINE in BRIGHT YELLOW stolen near here. From memory both were found quickly.

I suspect a PRIME hatch is quite expensive - isn't it carbon-fibre. Worthless as scrap metal though.

I've been going through a hacking situation myself. Something is making my car trigger security cameras around me. The cams are in infrared, so you can only see it on other surfaces and I have no idea what to do about this.

 

To be honest, this doesn't sound like hacking at all nor a deliberate trigger for security cameras. It sounds like security cameras being their typical selves and detecting false positives for movement.

What's probably happening is your car is a different temperature to things that move next to it (e.g. plants/trees). When things move in the wind, the security camera's PIR sensor (if it has one) is being triggered as it's seeing the movement against the background of your car.

Most security camera's don't have PIR sensors, which means they're just triggering on movement. Assuming your car isn't moving while parked, then it's not that.

Bear in mind that anything that is a different temperature to the background and moving will trigger a PIR sensor (like you find on security lights and some cameras), this includes rabbits, cats, dogs, birds, vents with warm air coming out of your house, open windows, exhaust vents from dryers, furnaces, heaters, etc. There's just a ton of stuff that sets them off.

Keyless Entry and the system that illuminates the car interior at night when you go near the car with your keys, does transmit every few seconds to see if the keyfob will respond, but the power of this transmitter is VERY low (which is why it only works when you're right next to the car), so is highly unlikely to be interfering with the shielded cables you find on security cameras.
