So I was making a left turn this week and got the dash Christmas tree effect. The shop is saying new hybrid battery and hybrid system pump to the tune of almost $3k. Worth it at 187k? Or is it time to out the Prius out to pasture?

    1) are they quoting you a genuine Toyota replacement battery?
    2) do you really, really like the car?

Less than two "yes" votes = time to say goodbye.

Yeah, the shop said they will only do a new Toyota replacement. The car runs beautifully otherwise, I've owned it since it was new and it really doesn't feel like 12 year old car.

    vdub, where are you located?

Also curious about what 'intake air screen' they are speaking of. Since I have yet to see one of those on any HV battery I've worked on............

If the engine is showing signs of heavy oil usage and it needs a battery I would let it go. It is a big financial decision one way or the other.

I'm in the Sacramento area. Not sure about the screen. I did go to grab my daughter's car seat (named tank) and noticed the vent area is linty/kinda gross looking.

I'm usually adding about 1/4th a quart St every fill-up, so about 1 quart every 1200-1500 miles. We've had a lot of wet, cold, windy weather, so the defrost, heat and AC have been running pretty much since November. I'm still getting about 48 mpg.

It sounds like you keep a good eye on your oil level. A lot of people don't and wait till the light comes on and wonder why they have problems.

Might be worth investigating the battery fan if it hasn’t been cleaned before ;).

Do you ever hear the fan running?

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

I've owned two Prii and never heard the fan run but hearing isn't one of my strong points.:)

Buy a rebuilt battery or replace the bad cells in your battery yourself. I did mine and I’m a 66 year old gramma. You tube videos are amazingly full of information. It’s not that hard if you follow directions and have some muscle. I did have tools available.
