The other day, when I turned on my 2005 Prius, I got an icon that looked like an exclamation mark inside a triangle. I looked this up in my manual and it only said to check the MFD. The MFD at first also shows the same icon with the word "Problem", then you see an icon that looks like the icon for the headlights. I can't find anything else in the manual about this. The headlights appear to be working OK. The "Problem" icon went out after a minute or so, so I didn't worry about it. Today when I started the car, I got the same thing and again it went out. However, after driving for awhile, it came on again and now remains on. My Prius has approximately 30,000 miles.

Any ideas of what the icons are trying to tell me other than I should take it to the dealer for service?

    Thanks,

    Mary Lou

Yes call the dealer, plan on taking it in. What year and package are you driving? I am guessing an 04 or 05? OOPS I almost forgot the little light Icon means a problem in your auto headlight leveling system. The lights would work but not point correctly. You may not see well and others may be blinded by your lights. It is in the owners manual, though I did it the hard way by looking in the Service Manual. Much more difficult to find. Owners manual is easy!

The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. The shop says that the HID headlight leveling sensor isn't working. They ordered a new one and am scheduled to have it replaced on Thursday.

Several months ago I asked them to raise the headlights because they were pointing too low. I've heard others complain about that too. I don't know if there is a connection, or if there is, if a bad sensor caused the lights to aim incorrectly or if the tech broke the sensor when he adjusted them, or...? But at any rate I'm hopeful that when the sensor is replaced everything will be working right again.

I am taking it in on Friday - of course, since I called yesterday for the appointment, the "Problem Icon" has not appeared. My Prius is an '05 - can't remember what you call the model but it is the loaded one, with the ABS, Navigation System, etc.

I have noticed problems with my headlights from the very beginning. They point to low - not out far enough in front of me. I mentioned this once when I took it in for service and they said they did something, but I never noticed any difference. I know that my husband's Camry has wonderful lights and you can see quite far down the road. I drive every day early in the morning when it is still dark down country roads that are not lighted, so this has been quite an annoyance. I will definitely pursue this problem and get it taken care of.

Please post again after yours is fixed and let us know if that took care of the problem.

    Thanks,

    Mary Lou

I got my HID leveling sensor replaced last week. Boy, what a difference! Now I'm sure that the sensor has been broken since I got the car, and that's why the lights were pointed so low.

I have heard of others who've said that their HID headlights are pointed very low and I recommend that if you have that problem, see if you can get the sensor checked out. It's about a $300 part so don't wait until the warranty is expired.
