How does it effect you MPG. My guess is the answer is not good?

I have one on my '06, and I think the impact would be negligible, at least not enough to notice a difference.

One thing to keep in mind that I learned after having it installed (Toyota OEM) is that it sits flat and very close to the hood (1/4"?) so there is minimal disruption of air flow. Unfortunately, this also means it is very difficult to clean underneath it, so I will need to remove it in order to do a proper cleaning (haven't tried this yet). It is in fact mounted with little screw clamps, not taped.

I am averaging 50MPG through my first 4 months of ownership, mixed city/highway, but generally getting better with each passing tank. ;) I think a couple of low-to-mid-40's MPG tanks of Toronto-Montreal freeway trips at 72MPH is pulling my average down a bit. <_<

I couldn't see any difference in MPG.

Haven't seen any need to clean under there, either. If I'm self-washing the car, I might squirt the hose under there.

If you go to the toyotapartsstore.com site and select the 2005 prius you will find a hood protector on sale for $50.01 plus shipping. It also fits the 2006 and has the oval cutout where the hood emblem is. You can email them and ask about it. I bought mine at Auto Seattle and paid a lot more for the same thing.

How does the bug shield go on? Is it an adhesive that may mar the paint, drilled or secured in some other fashion? Thanks

It has 3 little "bumpons" that adhere to the hood tp prevent the shield from ever touching it. I think I already mentioned that there was a cutout for the emblem. I really wanted a shield that stuck out from the hood to be able to clean/wax the hood under the shield without removing it, but couldn't find any. This one sets real close to the hood, maybe 3/8 to 1/2 inch away. I don't notice any wind noise from it or rattles. There are 6 clips that attach the shield and they go over plastic film pads that adhere to the edges of the hood. There used to be some pics of hood protectors on threads here but the hacking of the site the other day must have deleted them. I'll try to take a couple this week. I could email you the instruction page if you want. On the instructions the shield is called a Form Fit hood protector bu the sales receipt says its a Benevento BVBG-0179. I found the one on toyotapartsstore after I already bought mine. I emailed them to ask about it and it sounded like the same shield as I have. If I find one that mounts further away from the hood I will get it but until then this one works fine.

I can't answer your question about any improvements to fit the '06 but I have reservations about using it on the '06. I try to be careful when parking but I have managed to scrap the lower front air deflector on some high curbs and if there was a lower bra attached it would be all scrapped up by now. I wish the front set up just a little higher.

Got mine from Edward at sigmaautomotive.com

Took about 45 minutes to install - very easy to do.

So far after 2 tanks looks like MPG difference in minimal, but will know more after a half dozen tanks.

I've heard horror stories about the bug shields. One person even had it rub down to the metal. I'll never put one on my baby. They don't seem to help much anyway.

The one from woodash.com, which is $89.95, does not touch the hood at any point, except for where it is mounted at about 5-6 points, on plastic clips that tighten as you tighten a screw into their sides. They give you small clear pieces of stick-on plastic film to put on the hood where the clips will go.

Also, they give you some clear rubber bumpers, which are mounted on the hood itself, to protect the hood in case the trailing edge of the shield was to somehow press down and contact the hood. They stress that you have to mount the bumpers on the hood, not the shield, because if they were on the shield they would be moving as they contacted the hood paint.

I've removed them from a couple of cars upon trade-in, with no residual effects.

I agree with you that they don't seem to help much, as far as deflecting rocks away from the windshield (no way) or bugs away from the windshield (perhaps the skinny ones!), but I did seem to get an inordinate amount of little chips on the leading edge and 8" of my hood before installing the shields, so they do help there.
