Evolution of PriusChat or New Phenomenon?

I wave all the time. My wife thinks I'm nuts. No one waves back. :huh:

 

I bought my Prius less than 5 months ago, off the lot, having fallen in love with the Prius after test-driving a used 2005 at another dealership. I'd been intrigued by them since reading about them at sights like cartalk, edmunds, cars, etc., but didn't know about enthusiasts forums like this one.

I joined here a few days after getting my Prius and had a few specific questions - why am I only getting 42 mpg - and was quickly answered by many people, including people who referred me to articles. What got me really 'hooked', tho, was the wealth of information about useful add-ons to my Prius, like the side moldings and bumper protector, different options for floor and cargo mats, etc. I've become an add-on junkie! Even added leather seats after researching alternative seat covers here, and I'm waiting for my BT stiffening plate that should arrive this week, and I'm still trying to find a clear bra installer closer than 70 miles from my house.

I am NOT a DIY lady, so I'm not about to cut purple wires so I can dial my bluetooth phone while moving, and while the idea of a CANVIEW intrigues me, I probably wouldn't really know what to do with it, but I appreciate the fact that the 'oldtimers' here DO know that stuff and that it adds significant information to my questions like 'why doesn't my battery get fully charged?'.

But I really value the sense of community here, and that's what's keeping me coming back on a daily basis. I'm thinking about buying another Wee Pri from Rufaro, this time in black, so I can join the 'Cool Chicks with a Black Prius' club!

You had me a bit perplexed for awhile there. Then I considered the scope of my "interest" question. True, the TDI owners qualify. But how many non-TDI owners feel the same way about TDI? Not many, I bet.

With Prius, that's not the case. Quite a few people I know are very excited about the technology, despite the fact that they don't own a vehicle with it or will anytime soon. But they have their heart set on their next vehicle purchase being a "full" hybrid vehicle. How many can say that about the competing diesels?

 

Each forum evolves over time. The early adopters still love the Prius and get involved with PriusChat, but sometimes life gets in the way!

It tends to be like PC's- the hobbists and early adopters formed clubs to talk about them. Then computers became main stream and mass market, PC clubs got reduced in size. There will always be people who love new things and get involved and then there are others who just "use" the Prius.

At the OC Prius club, we have some members who stay involved, some who move off to work on "Life", and then new members who are jazzed about the Prius. It is ever evolving!

I agree completely, Jeannie, that PriusChat has encouraged me to become an add-on junkie, has a great wealth of knowledge, and a sense of community. Speaking of which, I'm excited that you want to join the Cool Chicks with Black Prii club!

Haha Well someone in the club said the Cool Chicks is more a state of mind than descriptor. I think it was because I suggested we could print the Cool Chicks logo on a baby T, and someone (an older lady I presume) responded that definitions are all she'd like to stretch.

Package 9 is the option to add another set of controls to the baby seat in the back - the 'B' position on the shifter's a necessity in that case!

I had a honk 'n' wave encounter a week ago here in NC. I waved back. Old couple, guy driving. Most of the time when I see another Prius, though, I'm thinking, "That's a cool color too, but I like mine better."

I remember years and years ago wanting an Insight. It was used, it was fairly reasonable, and they had it on the farthest corner of the lot. They said it was somewhat of a joke. With such underwhelming enthusiasm we passed it up and got a Buick.

It took the Buick's gas guage going inaccurate to prompt us to look for another car, and this time we found a great one, the Prius.

And what was one of the great surprises with the car was the fantastic group of people that came along with it. We even had a Prius meet here in Florida, and it was great to meet everybody. The enthusiasm is still there, but over the course of time many of the questions have been answered and/or debated. But yes, I too often wave with no response from the other Prius, but on occasion they do wave back.

And it is very impressive that efusco has a higher package number than membership number.

Hey, I am still trying with that acknowledge/ Prius wave, what ever you want to call it. Last week, I was in two lanes of stop and go traffic for about 15 minutes. Had an older couple in a Prius right beside me. Kept watching,(they had to know I was there, they also had mirrors) I wanted to make eye contact. Not a blink in 15 minutes. I think hanging out the window or sounding the horn would be rather obnoxious. Didn't want to do that. I wanted a spontaneous, feel good encounter.
Hey, they were older, maybe it was diminished vision or staid proprity.Who knows? I shouldn't make judgements.

Heck, I've to admit i was thinking with my wallet when I got my Prius. Didn't really research it, but i've never owned a car before this (back from Overseas in the Army), I always wanted a little 'Japanese tuner car' but figured since i'm driving 120+ miles a day I'd be better off with a Prius. However, after much contemplation and griping about how 'I could have got a Mustang GT for the same amount of dough' I've come to take pride in my Prius. I'm still stuck in trying to 'Pimp my Prius' and that led me to educate myself here at PC. After that I've just become hooked. Hopefully i'm on the road to create an All-In-One reference at priusmods.wiki.com for all the people like me (Read: Newbie). Heck there's ton's of little 'mods' in and around here. Unfortunately no one has offered to contribute to my sight

Ack, I wish we had the same numbers down here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I see TONS and TONS of Prii on the road... but after 6 months of driving and hundreds if not thousands of anticpatory moments, I've only gotten 1 wave

edit: For those of you who have no idea what's going on with this, I don't blame you a bit. Here's my side of the story. Rufaro kindly sent me a silver WeePri, for which I thanked her profusely. In a moment of creativity, I turned it into a convertible - a targa, actually - by cutting out a portion of the roof. There's a thread here somewhere with pictures. Should I have asked first? We now return you to your regular programming.

 

I suppose I'm nether a newbie nor an old timer.

You have to give the proper prius wave in order to be acknowledged.

Unfortunately some people are unable to do that! Sad genetic truth. Should they be consigned to GM's? I think we should look at their minds and not their hands. If they have achieved the enlightenment to become one with the way of the Prius they should be admitted. It is the atvar and not the hand. If they are one they can be part of the whole.
