I have a Gen 2 and a Gen 1, both of which I've held onto far too long IMHO. I should have already done this too - I want to finally purchase a Techstream nock-off. I just spent too much time looking over the current offerings, and based on seller descriptions, I'm now more confused. I also spent some time searching here for recommendations, but still not sure what I need for my models - what firmware, what SW? Which windows OS is best for ease of installation and functionality? 32bit or 64bit? I do know that also depends on the SW and I have to match SW to OS compatibility. I would appreciate any help including a good thread that already addresses my concerns. Thanks for your time.

Just went through this with my 2007. Here’s the mini-VCI cable and software I bought off Amazon:

I installed the driver and Techstream software on a 64-bit Windows 10 laptop, following the instructions here (with some modification, as noted below):

(Solution) Mini VCI + Toyota TIS Techstream 8.x on Windows 7/8 64-bit. - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

A few notes: I couldn’t get FirmwareUpdateTool.exe to load on my laptop. But turns out I didn’t need it anyway to check that the drivers loaded properly - Windows device manager confirmed it (and if you can get FirmwareUpdateTool.exe to load, note that you shouldn’t actually do a firmware update - just use it to check that the driver installed properly). Also, ignore his activation instructions in step 5. The disc for this mini-VCI has a readme.txt file that has different instructions specific to this software. BTW, the software on the disk is version 12 (the linked instructions above refer to v8 software).

Then, finish with steps 6 and 7.

The install went pretty much without a hitch and the cable and software work perfectly. Feel free to follow up if you need me to walk you through anything during the install!

will it allow you do bleed the brakes? currently deciding on whether to fix brake actuator with used part or just sell the car. I like you feel more confused after reading all the reviews from all the mini VCI and disc combos.

Not sure I understand your question or what you need Techstream to do regarding bleeding your brakes. I’ve used it only to do a Health Check of all the major systems on my car and, more specifically, to diagnose my dying HV battery. I’m no expert and am just learning it myself.

once the brake actuator is replaced, the brake system needs to be bled. you cant just old school bleed the brakes and be good. you need techstream on a comp. its a long process and it also runs the abs module. techstream from Toyota is 65$ to rent for 2 days. most of what ive read is that the knockoffs are good for diagnosing and monitoring systems (much like your using it for) but wont allow other things like brake bleeding.

Got it. I’ll leave it to people more knowledgeable about it than I am to help you with that.
