So I need to reboot the passenger side driveshaft.
while getting it out it fell apart so regrettably I don't have it marked while way the three way bearing is inserted. anyway to get a best guess on that part?
also the reboot kit comes with new grease and snaprings and stuff My question here is more along the lines of cleaning the old grease so I can get a closer examination of the bearings etc. what should I use the manual is not really clear on this and I don't know if there is anything that could be damaged by carb cleaner or engine degreaser. I figure that getting the old grease is important because
    A. I need to physically check the bearings to see if there still look and feel good can't do this with the old grease still in the way.
    B. The new grease needs to not be hindered by the old broken down grease from doing it's job.
So does anyone know what to use to clean the bearings so I can inspect and well reassemble after.

I assume it has a lot of miles on it, I would replace the whole unit with a reman, they are so cheap.

Thanks I have the whole manual, so yeah I got this, but it there it says nothing about cleaning like mechanics already know how to so they didn't write this in.
    This is why I'm asking.

I bought one of those it was missing the dampener, so the whole thing is out of balance so now if I drive faster than 60 I get 3 warning lights on the dash board (!) ABS VSC

My car was driving better with the old shaft the only reason I replaced it was a boot leak. regret this decision should have just left it there and used a split boot kit. but to late now to do anything about it. besides rebuild the drive shaft.
What is the safest way to remove the old grease?????

Lol I bought this shaft on ebay like 3 years ago just got around to changing it so no warranty for the POS Detroit axle rebuild.
But I can fix mine just need to know what I should use to clean the old grease off so I can assess the condition of the bearings.

I'll bite: kerosene? IIRC that was recommended for motorcycle chain cleaning, and they have rubber o-rings.

I agree with Mendel or any strong solvent that will remove all the old contaminated grease.
Some of the new approved solvents they sell for the DIY people are just a fraction of the strength of the old days.
Years ago when I worked in the steel mill we had stuff that would disolve screwdriver handles.

Don’t use solvent. It is almost impossible to get it fully rinsed out of the outer joint. Just wipe up as much grease as you can replace with new.

If there is actual debris in the joint then the joint is not worth rebooting. Just my opinion...

I would use brake parts cleaner to clean metal parts, but not use that on rubber parts that need cleaning.

If all else fails you could follow the manufacturers directions, either the boot manufacturer or Toyota's.

Well the boots are being replaced after cleaning so rubber parts should not be the issue. Are the bearings on both sides all metal??? Anyone know ??

If it's just metal I think you can go nuts?

The bearings are metal. But even after removing the balls in the outer joint you cannot fully clean out the housing. This is why I only suggest soaking up the old grease with clean rags.
