No, in fact you can't use it above 34mph (if you mean via the EV button). Stealth--electric only driving is possible up to 41mph. Above that the best you can hope for is Hyperstealth driving where the ICE is being spun by MG1 (at an electrical cost), but is not burning gas.

So with MG1 stationary - the gearing only allows MG2 to drive up to 34mph?
so there is a lockout to make make sure MG1 is running above 34mph?
    Is that what happens?
or would MG2 be ok if there was no lockout ?

The 34mph limit is a simple computer limitation so that you don't too rapidly drain the HV battery in EV mode. Likewise the 41mph limit of regular Stealth mode.

MG1 is never idle. At 34mph it is at ~5200 rpm (MG2 is at ~2000 rpm), at 41mph it is at ~6300 rpm (MG2 is ~2500rpm). The max. limit for MG1 is 10,000 rpm.

Do I have the correct motors for MG1 and MG2?
Does MG1 rotate at the same speed as the ICE?

Is there a link I should be reading first?

How can I eanble hyperstealth mode above 41mph?

All three are independant (to a point). MG1 can turn without the ICE turning. See this excellent nomogram and graphic by one of our own...

    thanks :)
    I ran the demo
which of the 3 parts of the planetary gear is connected to the wheels?
Is it MG1, MG2 or ICE?? I'm guessing its MG2

    If I run ICE at 3000 and MG1 stationary I get 70mph :p

    Drive down a hill.

EV mode won't work above 34mph or whatever it is because it would draw too much current from the battery and would knacker it.

I often get only yellow arrows on my MFD going down hills at 70, and on some hills at 80. I believe this is what's known as hyperstealth?

Yes, MG2 is connected to the wheels.

Flash was the only way I could make that interactive and save myself from typing (and my audeince from reading) page after page of stuff to understand a simple dynamic. Sorry if it pisses you off ;) FWIW there are no ads on my page, and Flash can be useful when it's not used by evil-doers and freedom-haters to force annoying flickery ads in our faces!

    thanks everyone!
I agree about flash - but it has its uses
3rd generation Prius is the one with the extra door - right?

When coasting downhill in hyperstealth mode - how 'off' is the ICE?
    no fuel no sparks
Do they open the valves as with Civic for minimum drag?

I guess there's something to stop the ICE rotating backwards too :p

Has anyone switched off their ICE while running at 60-70mph and checked if MG1 and MG2 are happy?

Are there any custom Prius gear boxes out there with alternate ratios?

The Prius that went 130.794 MPH had a different gear ratio (among the other changes).

AFAIK, you can't switch it off...pushing the Power button will put the car into neutral. I guess if you pressed and held down the power button you might get the car to shut off, but I suspect it would stay in neutral. If it didn't stay in neutral it would go into park....or try to, rip off the prawl and perhaps destroy the PSD.

Why don't you try and see this weekend?

If you were on a downhill at 70 mph seeing no arrow or green arrow to HV battery, your ICE is just spinning with no fuel.
If you forced the ICE stop spinning (0 rpm) at 70 mph, the MG1 becomes overspun of it's 10,000 rpm limitation.

Thanks to those who constructed the "flash" sites. I am a visual person and would never have understood how a planetary gear system can function as a cvt without them. I also ejoyed Hobbit's narrative.

Heh, I've tried it. It goes into Neutral, in "ACC" mode. The dash is blank, except the gear indicator, and you lose the power steering. You can't go into Park until you come to a halt, at which point the gear indicator disappears, putting you into the normal "ACC" state.

I have an idea... don't try it!! Your car makes those sort of things difficult for a reason ;) You definitely don't want to be in Park while moving, so thank your car from saving itself from you.

Thanks for that link NuShrike, that's close to what I was aiming for with my demo as well.
