Any experiments for a long trip

    I'm heading out on about a 3,000 mile trip soon, headed east from Nebraska, through Ohio, to DC, then up through Pennsylvania, New York, Canada, and back through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Nebraska.

    To DC will be mostly Interstate, but from there I'm going to favor the back roads and off the beaten path.

    Any tests anybody is interested in? HV recharge mode, max range on a tank, etc?

    That's a given. About 3/4 of the trip is by myself, as my wife departs at the 800 mile point.

    I'm going to test my silent and dark settings on the car in some campgrounds. Turned off all the beeps and flashes that I could, will max on traction battery before I get there, set my interior lights to as few as possible.

    It's a loop, right? Run for the Runza? get bland big-brand interstate rest stop food across to D.C., then eat things containing Maryland crab all the way up to PA, then you get scrapple and cheesesteaks & Primanti bros to get you most of the way to the Ohio valley...

    I don't eat them here in Nebraska, so I won't start on the road. On the interstates, I typically stop at rest areas with some car food (sandwiches, crackers, cheese). Get out, stretch the legs, listen to the trucks roar by, do a little people watching, clean the windshield, etc. Looking forward to some good scrapple and cheese steaks. I'll need to get some Timmy's up in Canada.

    Sound level on different road surfaces?

    Try out EV Auto mode once the engine is warmed up (we know if it’s cold, the car runs like it’s in EV mode).

    There’s a regen value hidden in the Energy Monitor. If you have long descents, maybe see how much you can regen? I don’t have the value but I got back 8 miles coming down Mount Baker.

    I don't expect any on this trip. But, in the Rockies I was able to regen about 40% of the traction battery capacity on a long downgrade on I-70. I'll look for opportunities though.

    Ohh? That’s pretty good.

    Hopefully I’ll have the chance to do a trip across the Rockies this summer. If so, I’ll report my findings.

    Dont have any experiments but some suggestions on a couple of apps I like for long drives (on Ios but may also be available on android)
    for food: Flavortown. lists all the places Guy Fieri goes in his show.
    for kooky places to visit: RoadsideAmerica. While they list the normal tourist stops there are lots of little known places/things as well.

    That one isn't too far from me. And it's something to see soon, if ever. They're getting antsy to find a buyer and I suspect it will simply close for good if they don't find one soon.

    Thanks. I'll try that. I have been using Roadtrippers to find interesting things along the way, but more is usually better.

    I usually average it out both ways. In my Gen 3, I think the average both ways was about 50mpg. It was 57mpg going west and 47 mpg going east. maybe more than 50?

    One thing I've toyed with is increasing my long distance mpg by using EV mode to accelerate up to highway speeds, then switching to HV (to preserve the battery). I suspect that a fair bit of my gas usage is from acceleration, but I haven't had enough road trips to truly test it out.
