There is a valid complaint that Toyota has too many, overlapping models such as the Scions. Consolidation of bodies with more variants in them makes a lot of manufacturing sense.

I thought this Corolla hybrid was 1.5, seems now it has the proper engine, the 1800cc.

A sedan smaller than a Camry?

    It'll eat the Volt-2 alive.

But the Volt is a hatch, and has a plug.

The ratio of tax for cars in China is still high, take Prius for example, the staring MSRP is about US$35k in China, altough it doesn't sell well and you could get a relatively big discount & roughly $30k OTD price with all taxes included. The difference of tax amount between a 1.6L and a 1.8L Corolla in China is not neglectable, even if the tax ratio is the same. In fact, Toyota sells more than ten 1.6L Corollas for every 1.8L non-hybrid Corolla in China before. It could be concluded that the Corolla hybrid did not aim at the majority of current Corolla customer groups in China all along.
In the aspect of taxes related to engine displacement in China, there are several kinds of them, 1.5L and 1.6L cut-off both exist. Generally speaking, the ratio of tax is higher for a 1.8L car than a 1.6L one. Toyota is reportedly introducing 1.2L turbocharged petrol Corolla to China this year (same engine as Europe's Auris 1.2T).

The 1.5L Corolla Axio (E160 series)for Japan is a relative small sedan comparing to the US/EU/China ones.
The US/Canada Corolla 11G belongs to E170 series, so does the Corolla Altis.
The EU Corolla and China ones belong to E180 series, these Corolla sedan's dimensions are on par with E170.
Here are some photos of Corolla hybrid and Levin hybrid in China taken by actual owners.
They are assembled by different Toyota joint ventures in China, may have some different appearances and optional equipments,
but underneath they are the same E170 Corolla sedan.

Toyota already have many hybrid models for the Japan market.
If they still want to replace today's non-hybrid with HEVs and today's HEVs with FCVs gradually, they have to introduce something like Corolla hybrid to the US market, sooner or later.

The Corolla hybrids for China are all 2700mm wheelbase sedan.
And...yes, the Prius' 2ZR-FXE engine is basically a Atkinson cycle variant of the 2ZR-FE for Corolla.

Here are some photos of the Corolla hybrid's trunk
    image.jpg
The measurement was done by some Chinese reporter.
I do not have the comparable measurements from Camry hybrid, but the trunk of Camry hybrid may still be a little larger.
Toyota doesn't always give out the luggage volume figures in China.

    P. S.
The Official Fuel Economy figures of Corolla hybrid in China (same standard as EU/NEDC)
    Corolla 1.6L CVT Urban/Extra-Urban/Overall (L/100km) 7.6/4.9/5.9 (US MPG: 31/48/40)
    Corolla 1.8L CVT Urban/Extra-Urban/Overall (L/100km) 8.0/5.1/6.1 (US MPG: 29/46/39)
    Corolla 1.8L hybrid Urban/Extra-Urban/Overall (L/100km) 4.5/4.1/4.2 (US MPG: 52/57/56)

sometimes volume isn't as important as visual usable space. the corolla has a nice shape with no obstructions, hycam is better than first gen, but still a lot smaller than camry.

Different segments, if it happens it will not "replace", means that Toyota will offer a C-segment smaller hybrid than the hatchback Prius, dropping the B segment Prius c.

Yeah, the Corolla and Prius are in the same segment. The Prius c is smaller; in the same segment as the Yaris.

It is likely the Prius c/Aqua will be replaced by the Yaris hybrid for most of the world. In the US, we'll likely just see the Prius c disappear without a replacement. The Toyota Yaris may even get replaced with a Mazda Yaris hatchback here.
