I'm so mad at Apple!!! Does anyone have a workaround?

iPhone 7. Just updated to iOS 12.2 a few days ago. Things changed.

I like connecting the phone to car with USB. I can charge and play at the same time. But after the iOS update, now, it can ONLY play the iOS native Music app via USB. Youtube and Podcasts would yield NO sound if connected with USB even though the playback progress is advancing. (I haven't tried phone calls.)

Yes, I can still play those apps via Bluetooth. I don't like using Bluetooth; further more, if I plug the USB cord (to charge the phone), even though it was playing (via Bluetooth), it would go silent as soon as the USB connection is made.

Has this happened to anyone else?

    So, so, so frustrating!!!

I don't use my iPhone to play music, but I do use it to navigate via Google Maps. And, sure enough, since upgrading IOS, I cannot get the app to give me directions via the speakers. This is annoying, since using the phone to navigate chews through battery time. HELP!

This is also my concern, I don't know what happened or if there is an incompatibility issue after the iOS upgrade.

    Problem solved!
I was having this problem, especially when trying to navigate using Google Maps while my iPhone was plugged into the car. I have recently figured out how to get the turn-by-turn directions play through my car's speakers. Here are the steps:

    1) Open Google Maps
    2) Click on the menu (three small horizontal lines) in the upper lefthand corner
    3) Click on "settings" (the gear icon)
    4) Select "Navigation"
    5) Turn on "Play voice over bluetooth" and also turn on "Play as Bluetooth phone call."

Make sure these two switches are on before you exit "navigation." If so, you're done!

I also figured out playing anything (Youtube, Podcast, Maps, etc) via Bluethooth while charging.

    1) without cable connection, enable bluetooth on both phone and car to make sure your app plays through speaker (maybe BoltonJoe's tip is needed, but I never needed to do that).
    2) connect phone to car using USB charging cable, and now the sound disappears, but my app continues.
    3) Touch car screen "Source" to switch to "iPhone" (USB). Now, the previous app stops playing because sound source is changed. If you have music in your Music app, it'll start playing automatically. In my case, I have none, so it shows a message that I have nothing in my library.
    4) Hit play in the previous app to continue playing (but you can't hear yet), and now switch "Source" on the car back to Bluetooth. Now, the sound from the app should play through the speaker via Bluetooth.

Again, I'm still disappointed that I must have Bluetooth on to play the sound through speakers, but at least I can keep the phone charged.
