otoh, if you need button parts or repair, compare that to touchscreen replacement

Too: I think older style heat/vent controls: dials and sliders with detents, are another level of ease-of-use, compared to the uniform row of buttons on our 2010. The vent mode button in particular: first you have to look down to identify it, then you have to push it repeatedly while watching an LCD display scroll through small icons. Not a lot of fun as you get onto the twisty Barnet highway on a dark/rainy night.

Someone said this to me years back, and sometimes it's very true: "We're going backwards".

    that barnet is a doozy

yeah, the prius buttons are only a step up from the touchscreen. i've hit a/c auto by mistake more times than i'd care to admit.

EXACTLY one of the things that, to me, moved the Gen III back in the UI category. On the Gen II I could hit one button on the side of the MFD (which I could do without looking after a short time of using the car) and 1 big and easy to see "button" on the touch screen, all without moving my eyes down from the road much and certainly for a MUCH shorter time than the Gen III.

I also think they are enamored with touch screens because it helps justify a 30 thousand plus dollar automobile. In the Prime the price delta from the Plus to the Advanced is mostly visible with the larger touch screen. Even the lowly Nissan Versa differentiates trim levels by the size of the screen. Personally I would prefer zero touch screens in my cars. My 2016 Leaf didn't need one and had most of the same features as my prime. The features it didn't have wouldn't have relied on a touch screen anyway (LKA, Adaptive CC, that sort of thing)
