I had to disconnect my battery to work on something and after reconnecting everything works but the ICS. There is not a malfunction, just an ICS flashing indicator and a message that it is unavailable when the car is started. Looking in the user manual on page 356 there is a bullet that describes the issue:

"System initialization may not have been performed after removal and installation of the 12-volt battery. Perform system initialization".

There is no reference on how to actually perform the initialization. Has anyone run into the same issue and if so can tell me how to kick this off?

I might have found the answer. On page 384 it says "drive the vehicle straight for 5 seconds at speeds >22 MPH"

It is cryptic because this references how to reset the advanced parking system and does not call out the ICS but it says it needs to be done after the battery is replaced. I am going to see if it works and if it does I hope this thread serves to help future people that run into battery removal because the manual is confusing as hell.

    EDIT:
That is the solution. Drive the car for 5 seconds at >22MPH and suddenly you can turn the ICS system on again.

@Tideland Prius should make this a sticky. People will have this issue whenever they disconnect the 12V battery.

ICS - Intelligent Clearance Sonar. A set of ultrasonic sonar sensors positioned around the vehicle to not only assist the driver in determining the proximity of objects around the car, but to also provide braking force at very low speeds by automatically stopping the vehicle if the car determines that an impact is imminent. This feature works essentially at speeds you would be when parking the vehicle.

Lol. I was giving you a "like" for the excellent explanation - then I realised you got it from the PC glossary.... which I wrote.

The day after I drove through deep water on the road, I got the ICS error. It did NOT resolve after driving over 22 mph for 20 Minutes. I'm hoping it will resolve as the car dries out.

    Fill the car with rice?

The reset is guaranteed for disconnecting the battery, all bets are off if this is a short due to water. You are lucky you didnt hydrolock.

Could just be dirty sensors giving the error...

This recurrent problem with ICS and CPSA seems to me to reflect a significant design defect. I say that as a Prius fan; our family owns four of them. But this error crops up whenever it rains. Other car companies seem to have mastered basic waterproofing. Why hasn't Toyota?

I had to replace my 12 V battery in my 2016 and was told it will learn on it's own. I tried the 5 second 22 mph it said to do... WHERE are you going to do that? Down your street depending on where you live I guess. First you have to get up to 22 mph and then go for 5 seconds in a straight line. Dangerous and good luck with that. The battery needs to be disconnected while you're parked in a supposed straight line, I guess, right? That's the gist of what I got out of it. You hook up the battery get back in the car, go in line at 22 for 5 seconds? You should be on a high speed wheel roller like at the emissions places.

Thank you, the solution "Drive the car for 5 seconds at >22MPH" worked for me also. Although all my settings were retained only "ICS Unavailable" message pops-up. I was putting a o-ring on the battery terminal and the service guy used a told that memorizes the settings. So this is important to remember.
