Read that also on Exeltech website :)

Have visited US Consulate in Chengdu several times, but never saw their 'power room'. Could ask next time... Worst they could do is say no. Actually that's not worst they could do, but I digress.

Decades ago I did visit a small-town police department with a room full of lead-acid batteries etc. It struck me as a place where small problems could grow into large ones very quickly

Imagine it smaller and that's my vacation spot. Grandpa McCoalroller built the original electrical system out there with Edison glass tank cells, probably salvaged from a submarine or something. He used a Honeywell integrated motor-generator to produce A/C out of it.

My father modernized it in the 80s and then I took my turn just a few years ago. The whole neighborhood is the same way. We all have to be cautious though, the same remoteness that denies us grid service means that the fire department is >40 minutes away.

You would enjoy the basement tour of Scotty's Castle in Death Valley, CA.

Never heard of it, but according to the description on Wikipedia I would probably enjoy it.

    But then the bad news:

    maybe I missed it.

My granddad would have looooved it. He only had a Hammond B3 with a couple of Leslie amps.

Basement is (was) full of Edison cells. As I recall, elevated about 1 meter above floor.

Thanks and also to Tochatihu. Hmmm. I took a quick look Pure Sine Wave Inverters - Frequency Converters - NEBS Inverters - Exeltech and didn't notice any prices but some Googling turned up some very high prices for 1100 watt and 2K watt ones (e.g. $800+ for an 1100 watt XP series).

I don't plan to install a transfer switch. I don't own the house and will probably need to move within the next year or two. (Long story as to why.)

Tochatihu, what you mentioned is disturbing. :/ Unfortunately, I'm no EE nor manufacturing engineer. My soldering skills are limited. Sure, I can identify bad soldering jobs and stuff that's too close together, but correcting it might be beyond my abilities.
