So I just got a quote for a gen. 2 battery, original to the car that has 63,000 miles on it. He'll ship it to me for a total of 698.00.
Too good to be true? I'm wondering about what the possible complications or risks might be in a transaction like this. One I'm imagining is that it's been sitting in a scrapyard in Arizona for who know how long (I'll be sure and ask!) and it might be degraded because of that. Can it come back to life?
Other possible drawbacks or things to consider with this one?

The age of the battery would be a concern. That's a pretty old battery, regardless of the number of miles on the vehicle. Anywhere from 10-16 years old. Plus, you are unlikely to get cell performance data with this one, so the purchase is a crap-shoot.

Glad you passed on that battery. You're better off getting a new one.

If you could personally (or have someone else) check it out with the proper equipment before hand: maybe

Sight unseen: no (unless you like to gamble)

I read up about battery reconditioning/remanufacturing when the hybrid battery on my HCH1 first died and, in theory, its possible to bring a 'dead' battery back from the dead (or replace enough cells to get it functional). However, it'd be a project with no guarantee of success with the added risk of dangerous shock.

An at least 10 year old low use battery from a super hot climate state? Good thing you passed.
