I really like my 2006 Prius. And I hate to complain about minor annoyances.

Has anyone had a front passenger seat that makes squeeking sounds everytime a bump on the road is encountered? This is true regardless of whether someone is seated in the seat.

First I thought it was the head rest moving around, then we tried moving the seat forward and backwards, then we tried adjusting the angle of the seat. Its as though the seat material cushion is rubbing against some piece of plastic someplace.

Anyway, lets see what the readers of Priuschat have to say. Hopefully constructive comments please. :)

    Thanks
    Dave

Mine does it too but I can't tell for sure if it's the seat or the seat belt (doesn't seem to happen when someone is in the passenger seat)

If it's still under warranty, take it to the dealership and make them chase down the squeak and eliminate it.

are you sure it's the front seat? the rear seats have to really be pushed back into place hard for them to lock, and that can result in a rather annoying squeak.

if you're sure it's the front, then bring it back to the dealer and have someone fix it. that's not necessary in a new car, that's for sure.

let us know what it turns out to be, good luck :)

    Wow
    What timing!
I just noticed my car doing this for the first time (yesterday), in about six weeks of ownership.
I've installed seat covers on my front seats.
I then put an "armorall"-like protectant on the surfaces, so I thought maybe this was making that noise, but it seems to be coming from down around the hinge (door side) for the seat-back.
Boy it's annoying! I'll take a look when I get some spare time.
If anyone comes up with a fix, please pass it on.
    Thanks

The other day I went out and sprayed some silicone-with-Teflon lube on the seatback hinge (doorside).
All was silent for 2 days, now it's back.
Must be plastic against plastic. I'm hoping it'll wear in.

yay for Toyota TSB's to the rescue! :)

I recently downloaded all the relevant Prius TSB's with my 1 day subscription to TIS the other day... here's your problem solver... see attachment. :D

Interestingly enough, I've never experienced this. (or haven't noticed it)

    Good job on the TSB!
    Thank you!

Wow I just wish it wasn't that involved.
I might try to "ride mine out" and see if it goes away on it's own.

And, ...the time (1/2 hr), allotted for this, seems way too short.

This is why I HATE warranty repairs, unless absolutely necessary.

I can see a few things being glossed over on this one.

As mine is only happening on one seat, I may try this one myself.
Nay, ...I just had another look at the remedy, and on second thought, I'm not touching this one!

Well, I'm not convinced the problem described in the TSB is necessarily what you're hearing.

In my case, it was the seat cushion [only when the seat was unloaded] rubbing against the outer plastic trim piece on the side of the seat, closest to the door. I inserted some foam in there, just enough to hold the seat material away from the trim, and the noise has gone away and not come back.

Whenever the seat is occupied, the noise disappeared. Anyway, in my case, it had nothing to do with the attaching hardware, and the TSB, while interesting, would not have helped.

    Here's an update...

Sometimes the seat makes noise and sometimes it does not. And its independent of whether someone is seated or not. I weigh 150lbs and my wife weighs 115lbs.

So I wanted to wait until the seat was making noise and I took the car in for its 10K oil change and checkup.

I got the car back from the dealer and the Toyota mechanic checked the seat and said it is in normal compliance with other Toyota Prius seats.

We love this car. I just wish the seat would not make so much noise every time we go over a little bump in the road.

I guess a noisy seat is worth the 53mpg we are getting. So it goes.

To see if that pin is the problem, just unbolt, squirt some oil/grease down there and see if that makes it go away. That may very well be all that you have to do. It is certainly what I'll try first. After seven months, mine just started doing this today!

Just be sure that you have a torque wrench to correctly tighten the bolts. This is a safety critical item. The service manual calls out the correct torque (I seem to remember 24 or 27 ft-lbs, I'm at work and can't check). A search of this forum should turn up the correct number.

EDIT: I checked, it is 27 ft-lbs. See Page SE-10 of the service manual.

Checked mine today - has nothing to do with those locating pins. Had EVERYTHING to do with the outboard plastic panel below the seat cushion. Was just rubbing something else plastic under it. I shot some silicone lube in there and solved the problem.

Today I sat in the passenger seat and wiggled left and right to exaggerate the squeeking sound. Then I found the semi-circular fabric that is adjacent to the semi-circular hard plastic seems to be rubbing and if I insert my fingers between the fabric and the hard plastic - VIOLA - no squeeking!

    JRCT9454,
Yes, you mentioned this back on Sept 5th and you are absolutely correct.

This weekend I am going to try your suggestion with the foam between the seat material and the hard plastic material.

Thanks for your insight. Its appreciated.

Got a link? Still trying to figure out what this "semi-circular" stuff is!

The "semi-circular stuff" is the pivot mechanism to enable the adjustable seat angle for the backing of the chair. The pivot mechanism is where the vertical and horizonal portions of the car seat join. Its a semi-circular geometry to the nature of the variable angle that the seat can produce.

As I am typing this, I am wondering whether I am just adding more confusion.

This is why I love PriusChat! I just started hearing this same noise about a week ago (2 month old Prius, 3K miles). I'll check it out today to see exzactly where it is coming from.

    Thanks Guys

My passenger seat noise was from the seat's side trim piece rubbing on the seat hinge. I removed it and put electrical tape over the areas where I could it was rubbing on. I ended up breaking on of the clips to the trim piece. It was only after getting it off did I see that I didn't need to do that, as there is a screw holding another cover where the clip is attached. Here are my pics. http://www.flickr.com/photos/21580284@N03/
