I was just reading my owners manual for my 2006 prius and noticed in the very back of the manual it talks about buying A {signal} shop manual. Says to call your dealer or the Toyota Distribution Center. Well when I called I was floored to find out several things. First, there's more than 1 manual 4 manuals. I don't remember all the prices exactly, but the engine manual sells for $99.99 which was the cheapest. The rest were like $129 to $159.well over $500 for the whole set. None the less I was floored.
Has anybody else checked out these shop manuals and the high prices?? :(

Some of us have subscribed to the Toyota Tech web site and downloaded the entire manual or the parts we needed.

If you're going to make a living servicing cars $500 is a tiny price, if it's something you just want out of curiosity then yea, it's a lot of money. The online subscription is much more practical for the curious or the hobbiest.

Interesting.. a couple questions on this:

    1. Is a one day subscription enough to find/download the manuals. Sounds like it is, and $10 is a small price to pay for that.
    2. Is access to information limited in any way by your choice of "User Preference" on the subrscibe page, i.e. "Do-it-yourself", "wholesale/fleet service", "independent service provider", etc.?

If you dedicate your full time to the downloading you can probably do it in a day, but it's a time consuming process...they don't make it easy to download and even harder to organize.

There are a few folks out there that have done this already (downloaded and organized) and some, in the past, have been willing to send you the entire organized manual if you show proof that you paid the subscription.

Also, you can buy copies from Ebay...just be aware that they're illegally pirated and sold so you will be party to that if you choose to purchase this way.

The techinfo site is a great way to acquire the collection. I think it's only $30 for a month; you can easily download all of the manuals in that time. Do it while watching football or something.

I too will cast my vote for techinfo.toyota.com. Present price options are $10 for one day, $50 for one month, and $350 for a year. Downloading is a PITA (minor one), but I already have about half of the Prius manuals saved, organized into subfolders corresponding to the chapters of the manual. PDFs are so much more convenient than bulky manuals. And your subscription gives you access to everything they've got, not just the manuals, but also TSBs, tech training pubs, and so forth. All models and years too. It's an outstanding value -- can't rave about it enough. Try it, if only for a day, but be careful -- it's addictive! [IMG]

Thanks for the great web site, looks like I'll be going there for info. I use to make a living turning wrenches years ago, and in my opinion, $500. is a lot either way you look at it { to me it is, not everybody}.but in that respect, its just the cost of doing business,

Once I got the hang of downloading, sorting, and renaming I was able to download EVERYTHING for the 2006 Prius in less than 4 hours. It took me a few weeks to then sort, rename, combine, and bookmark everything the way I wanted for easy access. In fact i'm due back to check on if there are any updates plus download everything for the 2007 Yaris for my dad.

<strike>If you have proof you have a subscription to techinfo.toyota.com I might let you have access to my sorted and combined documents. PM me for more info. Keep it hush hush</strike> ;)

Unless of course you live outside the US like us Canucks (and others) that Toyota won't even let pay for access.

Do they have one of those repair guides that you can buy in auto parts stores? "Hanes" I believe they're called?

I had a Haynes for my last car (Ford Probe). I also had the shop manual ($80) and electrical guide ($25). The Haynes ($12.95) is nice, but more like a "Car Manual For Dummies." It's handy, and I used it more than the shop manual, but it covers a lot less ground.

If there was one for the Prius, I'd probably get it, but maybe the techinfo site would be good if you really want to go in depth.

the haynes series is ok for basic stuff... how things come apart, etc. i don't know if/when/what they'll do for a prius manual or if it will be worth anything.

unfortunately print repair manuals are insanely expensive... the cost of wrenching is going up every day, kinda wish the pay matched that trend! ;)

While $500 is pretty high in my book, generally service manuals for cars are pretty expensive. http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/dept...sid=&dept_id=10 has prices for Nissan service manuals if you're curious.

Dave, David here. ;) Someone replied in another thread that you can get around this by just entering a US city and postal code when you give them your info. I suppose it worked because the site doesn't check with the card company right away on the address. I haven't tried it yet so I can't verify if it works.

I had to do the same thing on the euro site. It would not let me put in a USA address so I had to put that I was in France. It did let me put my real address for my credit card. But I think that the eruo tech doc site is ran by a different company because its completely different layout. About 2 months later I got a letter in the mail from France addressed to me in France but had USA OHIO hand written on the front of the envelope. ASll it said is that they charged my credit card and owed nothing. :)

Could you please post the link to the euro site.

    Thanks

I seem to remember a conversation on this board saying that the guy who made that CD had ripped off a bunch of diagrams and stuff without permission from a fellow member on this site as well as from Toyota. Buyer Beware...
