What was your final solution for the cooling?

    Cooler with deep cycle battery..

I’m out about $150 with battery purchase and cooler purchase (which I think I got a very good deal on )+ wiring from car audio place.. I deducted amount I sold my extra battery for since I got brand new optima ..

At least the cooler is the best rated cooler according to some sites :)..

I think some of the car campers here would be interested in how things work out with this cooler set up.

If you want the very last word in cooler installation, second 12V battery installation, and a host of other camping related mods, go to YouTube and search for "PSC Camper Conversions" and you'll get the YT channel of Tim Dillen, who, IMO, is a master at making his Prius a camping machine. If you watch the video: "Prius Stealth Camper Build, living, dometic, car, Boondocking", you'll get a very good summary of what he's done (he subsequently removed the microwave oven...), and he has also posted many focused videos on how he did the second 12V battery, as well as many other excellent videos. Not only is Dillen a wizard, he makes very cogent and well organized, informative videos. Ain't cheap, tho: the cooler/freezer he settled on costs upwards of $530.00, and the second battery is no pushover. One must know what one is doing... I realize that the OP is not about camping, but Dillen's vids are worthwhile.

He also has a website, with some good writing, and links to his YT vids: PriusStealthCamper(dot)com

As someone who's always been keenly interested in hybrid camping after reading about it here for the first time around a decade ago, I finally got to experience it last week for a couple of nights due to a major power outage from windstorm damages.

Bottom line? I'm no longer interested in purposely camping in a car. o_O The continuous ICE power cycles are too disturbing for me for fitful sleep even wearing ear plugs. It was better than sleeping in the heat (101f the second day) and humidity but not by much. Also, the around the clock supply of electricity my cars provided for lights, fans, and chargers in the house was appreciated by everyone home!

    Little update on this..

I decided to return the cooler and get my money back.. the deep cycle battery did not provide enough current to bring cooler to optimum level ( I noticed the fan on top was spinning slower)..

I could buy the power cord with 2 prongs at end but i would have to buy a rechargeable inverter battery (a good one costs upwards of 100 on Amazon ) , so I scrapped the entire idea.

Since I can’t return deep cycle battery (hazardous material - strange they can ship it to me but I can’t ship it back), im listing it for sale..

    Getting this instead :

    Check out:
Brent's Travels: Prius House Battery Migration From Gel Cells to LiFePo4

This guy lives in his Prius for four months a year and has a compressor cooler/fridge -- he uses a LiFePo4 type battery and he has no trouble running the fridge for 52 hours with the Prius in the OFF position before needing the Prius to be on for just under three hours to fully charge the completely dead battery. Obviously, it would take much less time to charge the battery if it were only partially depleted.

And to all of you who told the OP to just get some ice packs -- that' wasn't his question!! He wants to run his cooler with a battery.
